Does Your Vote Matter if You Live in a Red State or a Blue State?

You!

Every presidential election year in recent memory comes down to the same crucial swing states: Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado and Nevada... give or take a state or two.

I live in California, so I don't think it really matters who I vote for because the Democrat will almost always win, due to California being a blue state. Of course, I always do vote because it's my civic responsibility, but does it really even matter if you live in an entrenched "red" (Republican) or "blue" (Democrat) state?

CNN.COM reports:
The CNN Electoral Map is CNN's best estimate of the key states that will likely decide the 2012 presidential election. The map will be updated as the campaign progresses. Use the map to predict which candidate will win each state and see who reaches 270 electoral votes first.

Not really. Only if you live in a swing state.

I do and I plan to vote.

I am non-union so I will only be voting once.

I've heard over and over again that we dont determine the president, the electorial college does. So ill base my answer on that.

The Electoral College gets its energy from the voting pool. If no one votes there is no Electoral College.

It matters no matter where you live especially in the cases of local elections that still take place.. but these big elections are still important since they set the numbers needed for petition drives or recalls in many places.

Also.. just because a state is traditionally blue or red doesn't mean things can't change. People assume that Michigan, for example, is a solid blue but with all the people that moved out.. it wouldn't surprise me to see it start leaning purple or heading redish.

But right now.. I'm in Nevada.. I live in Las Vegas so we're being hit with all the political crap that exists... not looking forward to the next few months.

It sounds the same as here in the UK. If you live in a Conservative or Labour stronghold, there seems to be little point in voting for a different party except to add your vote to the national total. It won't change the outcome of the election one bit, but at least you can show who you wanted to be in charge.

It depends. When I lived in the Peoples Republic of New York, my upstate conservative vote was overwhelmed by the liberals in downstate (NYC Boroughs and like minded counties) as well as other liberal minded population concentrations scattered around the otherwise pleasant upstate.

Newsflash - the Electoral College elects the President, this means the majority vote of your state determines how your state will vote in the electorial college; not the national popular vote. This can be good and bad as evidenced in other elections.

When good people do not vote (or their votes are not counted) then the occutards, sheeple, and the dead determine the election.

He won in 1980 because Carter was almost as pathetic as a president as the current occupant of the WH. He won again in 1984 because he did what he promised to do and that was put ppl back to work....something Carter was clueless about. Ditto with our current "leader".

Well, usually. Missouri used to be a swing state, but this year, we are pretty well in the Romney category. Which should tell you something, since McCain won Missouri by 0.2% in 2008.

My vote matters if only to say to the foolish Liberals , I am an Ameircan and i deserve my vote for Mitt Romney, someone who will turn our country around. California is a lost cause, but I have always voted and always will.

The media and the Liberals don't want you to vote in a Blue state they want apathy , that is their mantra if they cannot get your vote , they want to dissuade you from voting at all.
