Does the 'Joker' Make You Question Your Grip on Sanity?

Nimitz 2012/07/22 05:21:24
Yes! It gives me cause to wonder what 'sanity' really is/means.
No! I'm the picture of normalcy. That could NEVER happen to me!
You!

The recent mass shooting committed by a person who, by all appearances, was perfectly normal and well on his way to a successful life gives us all cause to wonder what it is which could possibly make a person 'snap' and turn into a monster. Does it give YOU cause to wonder what could make you snap? Is pondering such a thing healthy?

The Joker isn't meant to make you question your sanity. he's meant to be Batman's foil. Batman was confronted with tragedy and meaninglessness early on, and he chose to make something powerful and meaningful from himself and the darkness. The Joker experienced similar tragedy, and decided to embrace madness and chaos.

I don't worry about myself because if I did snap, I'm sure I wouldn't know it anyway. I do think the defining factor between "eccentric" and "crazy" is violence, whether that means freaking out and attacking someone for touching your stuff, or shooting into a full theater.
Of course I am referring to people who would normally walk among us largely unnoticed, not blatant, medicated insanity.

Any one can appear to be just fine. who knows when any one can have a psychotic break? It think the signs are there, but few are trained and too few people have a real inkling of what a mental illness really is. Mental illness or things than ca cause a psychotic bread are never a joke, especially after this tragedy. I hope people start to educate themselves instead of laughing or turning a away.

There was a guy in white robes on the corner speaking gibberish. Soon they took him to Bellvue for observation. Next day about a dozen people showed up dressed and acting the same way. They released him, deciding that he was not crazy, but just a member of a group. Sanity is just a consensus.

When Heath Ledger died after playing the Joker in "Dark Knight" in 2008, Jack Nicholson made comments that it taken a lot out of him when he played the Joker in 1989! The orginal Joker, Caesar Romero, played him on television and never complained!

I remember that, but Romero's Joker was a comedy. Ledger's Joker was a course in "abnormal psychology". We laughed with Romero, but sympathized with Ledger, and apparently so did he.

Nope, if it's too dark a road to travel i just don't ... i will say this much though. That guy is one messed up individual who not only killed and injured but went further to lay booby traps at his residence for further damage by explosion!

All the news accounts I've seen thus far have him telling the cops that his apartment was booby trapped. He told them. THAT he told them seems to suggest a departure from his 'normal' evil craziness.

I wouldn't really call myself completely normal, but at the same time I'm not completely insane either. At least to the point to go out and harm innocent people or myself. :/

I've been the "gifted but socially awkward student." But I didn't blow up the place, or shoot anyone, or string tripwires all over my room (even when I had a "single" in the "residential college"). Because I still had a CONSCIENCE, and a good head for CONSEQUENCES. How does a guy get to the point where he really, really thinks he can get away with it? Not to mention not even regarding other people as "real"?

That's the Question of the Day--although I don't think that if/whether he'd get caught was one of his major concerns. He was waiting by his car for the cops to arrive, and literally handed himself over. This guy is a fruit basket!

Appearances are often misleading if not deceptive. Look at Ted Bundy, who was described prior to his arrest by someone who knew him well as "a serious, dedicated professional, seemingly on the cusp of a distinguished legal and political career".

I have no concerns about 'snapping'. I loathe violence and aggression under any guise, it is simply inconceivable that I would ever see this kind of action as a solution to anything.

Assuming that the particular way by which you 'fell out of line' didn't preclude/prevent you from dealing with it, perhaps. :-)

It's like I tell people: if I went that far over the edge I'd *want* somebody to ventilate my cranium. Hell, I'd want to ventilate it myself! I also understand that it doesn't work that way. The sane part of an individual would want to be dead rather than injure or kill others, but to get to that point the sane part is the first thing to go.

That's why absolute statements are dangerous. They 'tempt fate' in a manner of speaking.
