Does the drop in crime have anything to do with the surge in gun sales?

Since Barack Obama assumed control of the U.S. government, gun sales have surged.

The U.S. has experienced a drop in crime which goes against the narrative repeated by liberals that recessions and 'gun proliferation' increase crime.

In reality, recessions have little to do with crime rates but it seems gun ownership may:

Last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
announced that violent crime decreased 4 percent in 2011. The number of
murders, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults all went down,
continuing a pattern.

“This is not a one-year anomaly, but a steady decline in the FBI’s violent-crime rates,” said Andrew Arulanandam, spokesman for the National Rifle Association. “It would be disingenuous for anyone to not credit increased self-defense laws to account for this decline.”

Mr. Arulanandam
pointed out that only a handful of states had concealed-carry programs
25 years ago, when the violent-crime rate peaked. Today, 41 states
either allow carrying without a permit or have “shall issue” laws that
make it easy for just about any noncriminal to get a permit.

I am not a gun-guy but I support the second amendment to the US constitution as it was intended to apply to US citizens.

You're right. There have been numerous things happen out there that the media didn't report on. They are disgusting. Fox news is the only one I watch, but too realize they don't report many things themselves...like Sherriff Joe and his proof about Obama's birth certificate [ except a small segment ]. They haven't even interviewed him, nor do I think they took a look at his proof.

I know-I think they are being censored is why we are not hearing everything. They can say what they want, but the facts of all this BS is out there-they're just not reporting it.

An armed citizenry can deter criminals. Citizens have a right to defend themselves.

I am skeptical because we aren't hearing about all these armed confrontations with the bad guys. I rather think there are fewer victims, not less crime. Meanwhile there is surge in flash mob attacks against white people and looting of small businesses just for the hell of it.

You state: "I am skeptical because we aren't hearing about all these armed confrontations with the bad guys."

That's because the media is overwhelmingly *ANTI-GUN* and *ANTI-SELF-DEFENSE*.
Read what the media wrote about the Luby's massacre in Killeen, Texas.
Then compare the coverage of Luby's to The Shoney's Family Restaurant incident just 2 months later.
Google Thomas Glenn Terry and see what you find about that "armed confrontations with the bad guys."

Agreed. People can just Google the crime reports as submitted by police and sheriffs departments in their areas and anywhere else. Also, local online newspapers are not as anti-gun as national news corporations. They tend to be more upfront because they are managed by people who actually live in the community. Of course, the quickest cross reference of successful armed defense by citizens within the last 30 days can be found in "The Armed Citizen" colume of "American Rifleman" magazine.

it's amazing when the crimminals think that you might or might not have a gun they tend to look else where.Of couse if they wanted to be on dumb crook news they could ask you first if you have a weapon before they commited the crime.

It sure does, that and the number of states that allow their citizens to easily obtain a Concealed Carry Permit has much to do with the drop. Criminals are cowards who prey on the weak and when they know that their victims may be armed they think twice.

Interesting new statistic that Chicago has had more murders than we have lost troops in Afghanistan.

Doesn't Chicago have some very strict gun ownership laws?

It depends on whether the people are trained and able to use the guns in a reliable way to defend themselves. Look at the episode going on in Florida the last few months. I think Zimmerman is in Florida.

I think with more people being laid off from jobs on such a large scale has raised awareness, and those who have criminal records are finding it more difficult to find jobs with most companies hiring online.

Stolen computers and phones with internet access are much easier to track now. Thus, criminals are finding it in their better interest to not commit crimes in order to work legally. We have a "Big Brother" system in place with all the technology advancing the way it has done.
