Does the Confederate Flag offend you?
First I want to give my take on this question so that readers will know where I'm coming from. None of us alive today were ever slaves. None of us alive have ever owned a slave. No one in my ancestry owned slaves. I love the south. It's where I was born and raised, and the Confederate Flag has been exposed to me all my life. My display of the Confederate Flag on my newest avatar is not meant to be an insult or to offend. I do not support hate groups like the KKK. Instead this flag to me represents the heritage of this country, specifically the south where I grew up. When I see the flag it makes me proud of how far our country has come in regards to civil rights. It reminds me that we all have inalienable rights. My display is not support for abolishing civil rights. It is a display that never lets me forget and to thank all those before us who fought to make sure we are ALL free and equal. This country has a lot of history - both good and bad.

No, the Confederate Flag does not offend me because...+51it does not stand for slavery. It is a symbol of a group which did not want Washington to tell them how to run their lives. (could use a little of that today). If the Confederate flag offends a person, then the Democratic party also offends them since it was the party of slavery.

have american items from my family that fought there. So I teach my kids about what they both stood for that doesn't mean I hate everyone. It just shows the lack of education that people have and the unwilliness to learn.

The northern half of the United States along with the government was not holding up their end of this compact. They were angry that no one would take action and therefore did not want to be a part of the United States any longer. The United States government, in the south's eyes, had failed to complete the tasks for that they were established and the South then formed the Confederacy. (I do not support the institution of slavery or anything of the such, i support the South and their position on wanting to leave the Union).
When it is used to symbolize regional or family heritage it is fine. When used by hate-mongers against any people or causes, it is repulsive. What we need to remember is the early 20th century resurgance of the KKK with white robes and hoods marching in the streets of America. They flew the flag of the United States, not Confederate flags. And the US flag flew over a nation that supported slavery for 85 years. The flags of the CSA flew for less than 4 years.
Now, during our national commemoration of the 150th anniversray of the Civil War we should use the flags of the CSA as learning tools, not ban them because some people are offended by them.
