But had the circumstances been a little different, I would have said 'No.'

For one thing, the task of making the uniforms could have gone to struggling sewing businesses here in America instead of to a worker in China who could have gotten a different job. And because so many of our other products come from China, the uniforms are less unique to begin with. Might as well put on your best workout clothes and call it good, if we're going to go that route.

However, if the uniforms had been made by less-well-known nations who we're on good terms with (e.g. France, Germany, Denmark), and we had made their uniforms for them in turn, that would make sense. The Olympic Games are all about calling off military actions against each other for some much-needed down time and sportsmanship. Nothing in the rule-books says designing each other's uniforms doesn't count as sportsmanship.

TL,DR: It's okay that Team USA's uniforms were made outside the U.S., but it's ridiculous that, like nearly every other product America devours daily, they're:

sportsmanship tldr team usas uniforms ridiculous product america devours daily

I am totally pissed that our Olympic uniforms were made in china. Wth all the unemployment in america you would think they would consider the consequences of sending millions more of our dollars out of country. As far as some of our military weapons being made oversease, better for our country if we would just buy the design, if they are better, and a license to make in them in the US. But in reality, I think there are some fantastic weapons manufactures in the US.Smith and Wesson, Colt, to name a few. I have a Marlin 44 which I believe was made in the US, but of course that's a rifle which will kill at least a mile away. Ralph Lauren can take his olympic uniforms and shove them as far as I'm concerned.

I see some fingerpointing directed towards unions so it begs the question: If unions are solely to blame, why didn't these jobs show up in right-to-work states instead of communist China?

Methinks that we no longer ask what we can do for this county. Instead, we ask what this country can do for us. That's what's killing us.

Olympic uniforms, flags, any items used in the representation should be made in the USA. At the cost of $700 per blazer they certainly cannot say it was to save money. It was about promoting Ralph Lauren. The Ralph Lauren emblem on the blazers is even bigger than the USA emblem. The contract with Ralph Lauren should be broken.

Yes, it bothers me that parts of our military uniforms, equipment and hardware are not made in the United States by U.S. citizens. What I find scary is the fact that we have multi-million dollar equipment that are dependent on parts from third world countries. The majority of electronic components are NOT made in the USA.

Not a surprise, really, and no, it doesn't bother me. Welcome to the global trade economy conservatives claim to love so much (and then try to make political hay out of)...

Irony is the guy who tried to turn this into some big deal, Trump, carefully failed to mention while screaming about clothes being made in China that he himself had a line of Trump clothes a few years ago...all made in China! LOL!! Hypocrite!

It bothers me not because I believe that people should blindly "Buy American" (as I believe that team management DOES have a responsibility to spend with care) but rather because it means that US manufacturers were not able to compete effectively on the world market. THAT bothers me.

For once I actually agree with Harry Reid that they ought to burn the damn things and have them made in American Mills by American workers (not green card carriers).

And please get rid of those silly-arse looking hats!

If they cannot wear a beret properly, then leave it on the shelf. It seems that the Olympic teams used to use Stetsons. Maybe we need to go back to them.

    Thank You Richwright.

Back in about 1971 or 1972 I went to a clothing manufacturing plant near Lillington, North Carolina and saw that they were making uniforms. Back then most of the military wore the O.D. Green fatigues which was what they were making.

By late 1972 I was wearing those O.D. Greens. When I came home from Southeast Asia I spent about $30.00 and bought three sets of them complete with name tags, chevrons and command patches.

There were a few changes between 1972 and 1994 when I retired.

About a year ago I was in a Base Exchange and the shirt alone cost about $50.00 and that was without the patches and chevrons.

With those prices, we should hope that they are being made here in the United States.

It will be interesting to see how the olympic uniforms play out eh?

I wish I had a right answer. I'm not anti-union. The irony is that the people who were striking in the 70's are the ones shopping in Walmart today. Are cheap goods good for the country? I really don't know the answer to that.
