Knowing the people you serve with comes with the territory. There are just some unsaid occurrences that happened. Having a gay guy in the unit was just never a big deal. We knew, not because it was ever asked or information freely given, it was just known. No one ever let it become a problem. I was in an all male unit (given at the time combat arms were closed to females) and no one cared about. the only thing anyone cared about was whether or not you were going to pull your own weight and do you job. Yeah, in off duty hours we joked around and said off color remarks but for the most part we were kids trying to act like men It helped us ease the stress from training. When it came down to brass tacks thought we knew who we could depend on and we didn't give a rat's ass what the sexual orientation was of the guy next us, it was the furthest thing from our mind. We didn't know it but we were more mature in that aspect than the civilian world was. That is just my opinion, and that is all it is, just my opinion from my perspective.
So, what say you?

Even more important, what effect does it have on the cohesion in military units? If evolutionary psychologists like Gordon Gallup are correct that so-called homophobia is a natural majority instinct, how does this instinct affect troops in the field? Will politically correct conditioning be enough to override this aversion?
If soldiers are aware that one of them belongs to a group which historically used to have and still has a higher disease rate, will they still be able to work together like a well-oiled machine? Only time will tell.
