Does "Happy Holidays" offend you?

elijahin24 2011/12/06 04:39:44
Yes! to hell with anyone who doesn't say "merry Christmas"
No. Holidays are not limited to those of a specific religious persuasion, and neither is my attempt to spread peace and goodwill toward men...and women.
You!
Add Photos & Videos
"I say 'merry Christmas"; and if YOU don't like it, TOUGH!!!"

I’ve
heard some variation of this idiotic proclamation dozens of times each
year for more than a decade. I’ve been told that my disagreement with
the statement makes me un-American, unreasonable, and even a religious
bigot (the irony of that last claim will be discussed later).
Apparently, there is a world-war on the spirit of Christmas.

I
don’t hate religion. And even if I did, that isn’t the point of this
post. If you believe in God and have a personal relationship with Jesus
Christ, which enhances your life; I’m sincerely happy for you. And if
you truly follow the teachings attributed to Jesus, nothing I’m about to
say, applies to you anyway.

Let’s start with what should be
excruciatingly obvious: NOBODY IS TRYING TO STEAL YOUR DAMNED HOLIDAY!
Sorry to be so blunt, but get over yourselves. It’s unbelievable.
Christians make up between 60 and 80% of this country, depending on what
pole you believe. You make up more than 97% of our government,
including our president, speaker of the house, and the majority and
minority leaders of both the House and Senate, and the Whips of both the
House and Senate. Unless I’m mistaken, Christians make up 50 out of 50
governors in this country, and they have a strangle-hold on our
military. The Christian religion could not possibly be in less danger.
In fact, the greatest threat to Christianity, is not political
correctness (about which I will rant later), but science. The more
science reveals, the less we need supernatural explanations.

These
are the facts of the situation. The whole “war on Christmas” theory is
predicated on the premise that non-Christians are trying to steal your
precious holiday. But the problem with this is that it wasn’t yours in
the first place. Christians stole Christmas from Pagans. Originally, for
Pagans in Rome, Greece, and throughout Europe and northern Africa; the
Winter Solstice was cause for a festival. By the time Rome was
instituting Christianity as its national religion; Roman Pagans had
adopted Yule, and Saturnalia as the holidays they would celebrate in the
winter. It was these holidays that Constantine ordered changed to a
celebration of the birth of Jesus.

The reality is that Mary and
Joseph were in Bethlehem when Mary gave birth; according to the New
Testament; so that Joseph could report for a census. According to the
timeline in the Bible, this was under the reign of Caesar Augustus.
Augustus held his census’s in the summer and early fall, so that
travel would be easier, since every man had to return to the city of his
birth. This means that Jesus was most likely born around August.

So
when you talk about remembering “the reason for the season”; unless you
mean that Apollo is now bringing the sun back, you don’t know the
reason, yourself. So you see, it isn’t your holiday for non-Christians
to steal.

But that is really a lesser point in the grand scheme of
things. Every year, I hear someone sing about “the most wonderful time
of the year. I hear this time referred to as a time of love; and yet I
hear people saying Merry Christmas, not because they ACTUALLY want
non-believers to have a good day on December 25th; but because they want
to see if they can get a reaction.

And that brings us to
political correctness I’m tired of hearing that word thrown around as a
pejorative. Do you know what it is? It’s respect for those who are not
like you. It’s doing what your mother told you to do. What JESUS told
you to do. To do unto others as you’d have them do unto you. That’s it.
Nothing more, nothing less.

When you say “happy holidays”, you are
saying “it’s none of my business what your religion is, if any; but
there are some holidays coming up and the odds are you’re gonna
participate in one or two of them, so I hope they are joyous”. Merry
Christmas (especially since you guys have gone all militant about it)
now says “if you don’t love Baby Jesus, go to hell!; but if you do, have
a lovely day”. It's become your "shibboleth".

What you guys don’t get is that if the spirit of
Christmas is love; limiting your holiday greeting to those who share
your holiday is defeating that very purpose. You aren’t spreading joy or
love or kindness. You’re spreading vitriol and hostility.

I don’t
care if you celebrate the birth of Christ, the bottomless jar of oil,
or the fact that you’re off work and have some time for your family. And
I really don’t care what greeting you present to me; as long as it’s
presented with love, and not for the purpose of starting a fight.

Christians,
you’ve got this country by the balls. You can spike the ball in the
end-zone if you like. You can chip away at the wall of separation
between church and state as much as you like (though I’ll fight you
every step of the way); but for the love of all that is good in this
world; grow up! Stop acting like YOU are the persecuted ones. You can’t
possibly believe that. You can’t be THAT delusional. Get over yourselves
and have a happy holiday season.

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa... none of it "offends" me.

Well wishes and seasonal greetings are just that; greetings.

People who choose to make a big deal about it are just looking for something to complain about IMO; which kinda goes against the whole concept of "Goodwill on Earth, Peace to all Men."

When I was in 7th grade (in public school, 4 years ago) I had 3 religiouly bigoted teachers that really really hurt me a lot. I felt persecuted.
My reading teacher made us pray (well sit quietly with our hands together and heads down as she prayed for us) for like 10 mins so that we can fight to remember the reason for the season, and avoid gluttony, greed, selfishness, and losing our faith in general.

    2) my history teacher made us sit quiet while he told us the story of jesus being born.

    3) my last straw was in english when my teacher let us have a free day. We decorated the tree and chalkboard and some ppl wrote stuff like "happy holidays" and "merry xmas" and she flipped out and screamed for us to keep christ in christmas and remember the reason for the season. I have 7 classes, 6 teachers (I took band entry level and advanced for diff instruments) and already 4 classes in 3 classes in a row they were religious bigots about it. (Sorry rick perry, I don't buy yout campaign about kids not being allowed to celebrate christmas or pray in school...were still forced to, even with the laws!) So I gave up and wrote "happy hanukkah" everywhere. And in band, the teachers let us roam so I went to the other 2 and wrote on the boards "happy yule" and "happy hanukkah" and for the rest ...

I say Happy Holidays all the time, but that's because I was at the time including Thanksgiving and then Christmas and New Year's all in one greeting. I have absolutely no qualms about saying Merry Christmas and do frequently. It's like saying God bless you when somebody sneezes. I hear a stranger in the grocery store sneeze and I say "God bless you" very frequently. Nobody has complained to date. And it's not that I'm pushing any religion on anybody. I am just uttering a phrase which means a lot to me, which intimates a sincere desire that somebody feels all right, etc., and I think people pretty much understand and agree with that. It's just a handful of idiots that are making a mountain out of a mole hill. Dummies.

X-mas Has Become a Favorite Holiday of the Unsaved

Tragically, nearly all of the people celebrating Christmas aren't even saved. Most of the people observing the Christmas season don't know the Lord as their personal Savior. Even atheists celebrate Christmas by renaming it "X-MAS."

"Independence Day" is much longer than "Christmas," yet no one ever calls it "X-Day." "Thanksgiving" is much longer than "Christmas," yet we never call it "X-giving." Why is it that out of all the holidays in America, the ONLY place where people feel compelled to place an "X" is over our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is blatant evil. If you are reading this article and love the Lord Jesus, make sure to speak aloud to any business that displays the godless term "x-mas."

If it weren't for Santa Claus, reindeers, mistletoe, sparkling ornaments, tinsel, and a bunch of meaningless silly songs... the heathen world would abandon Christmas like a hot-potato. JESUS is the reason for the season.

It's fun to rant about something, especially when you're passionate about it. But you kinda look like a fool when you rant about something, and you don't know what you're talking about.
The "X" in "X-mas" means Christ. The greek word, which was eventually translated to "christ" is Χριστός. Here, let wikipedia learn ya; so that your next rant can be better informed.

It isn't an opinion. It's a claim. I'm not making this up. X DOES stand for Christ. It always did. It isn't cutting him out. It was the original spelling. And the only people who are offended by it, are either ignorant of this fact; or are denying it, in order to justify being pissed off about a non-issue.

It will not matter what you owned or what you where owed.
Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear.
So, too, your hope, dreams, ambitions, plans, and to – do list will expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won't matter where you came from.
It won't matter whether you where beautiful or brilliant. Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant. So what will matter?
What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built. Not what you got, but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success, but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.
What will matter is not your competence, but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you are gone.
What will matter are not your memories, but the memories that live on in those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered and for what.
Living a life that matters does not happen by accident.
    It happens by choice.
Choose my friends to live a life that matters.
These are thoughts I share with you
    Much Love……Dean

I don't think if we all lived a life that mattered that we would be judged or condemned by anyone or any faith. How could it possibly be wrong?
My apologies for the lengthy comment. I felt the urge to voice my thoughts along with the many others. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and season Greetings to all.

Dean, that's beautiful. I'm gonna share this with all my facebook friends. Is "Dean Butler" how you'd like it attributed?
Seriously, I'm really glad you posted this.

"Season's greetings and goodwill toward men" is what the season is all about.
Those who are offended by any of the different "well wishes" need to calm down.
I say Merry Christmas to everyone, and if that offends you, go be a scrooge somewhere else because I'm never going to change what I say in order to please a few whiny PC freaks.

See, this is what annoys me. My question was "are you offended when someone says "happy holidays" to you. And you and I were on the same page up until your last sentence. Then you went from being open and kind and full of holiday cheer, to "screw you if you have a problem with it, you PC freak".
The question wasn't "what do YOU say?". I don't know a single person who is offended when people say "merry Christmas." This includes my friends who are atheist, Jewish, and Buddhist. None of them has a problem with it. But we all get tired of people acting like we're ass-holes because we say "happy holidays".

"Happy Holidays" is great....you say what your comfortable with, I will say what I"m comfortable with, and leave it at that. You dont get on my case and I wont get on yours.
