It keeps weapons out of the hands of legal citizens, criminals don't follow the law. They buy them out of cars or from others that aren't legal on the street.

Interestingly almost of these governments were socialist States who came to power on the promise of building a socialist utopia. Socialist States always end up in tyranny when the money runs out and the money always run out. It is inevitable.

If someone is determined to kill, they will kill. No law will stop them.

The fact is, we are safer today than were 30 years ago. Utopias don't exist, you cannot legislate out evil. All we can do as citizens is protect ourselves and those around us.

Ultimately freedom rests *not* in the hands of the government, as governments can/do turn on the people, freedom rests in the hands of the citizens and their ability/willingness to defend it.

Yes and no. I think it's good to require people to have proper training before being allowed to carry a weapon, but I think that banning guns altogether does more harm than good. I think it's good to have a few sheepdogs in the herd to deal with the coyotes.

Look at DC for another example. One of the highest murder rates in the country for a decade. They ruled the ban unconstutional, the murder dropped substantially. Coincidence?

When people go out and use a gun to kill, steal, rape or whatever, do you really think that the law is going to stop them. They are already breaking the law by doing those things, gun control will not stop them, it will only make them less cautious of other people if they know others are unarmed.
