Does God still speak directly through prophets or us today?

Does God speak as He did with Noah, David, and the apostles. Through our spiritual gifts?

Has Special Revelation ceased, or does God still communicate to people through prophets, dreams, visions, and audible encounters?

Our experience usually trumps everything else. Sometimes maybe it should, Maybe God is speaking to you strongly through your experiences.

Our experiences and Scripture don't speak exclusively on this issue.

Three positions:

Continuationism – The view that miraculous signs gifts are still being given and, therefore, God still speaks directly in various ways today. Adherents; Wayne Grudem, Jack Deere, Craig Keener, Jack Hayford.
Acts 2:14-21, in fact All Scripture supports the idea that it is God's nature to work in supernatural ways. The New Testament never explicitly states that the supernatural sign gifts would cease. Abuse of these gifts does not led to rejection of the continuation of gifts. Just because it is abused doesn't mean it is false.

"If you were to lock a brand new Christian in a room with a Bible and tell him to study what Scripture has to say about healing and miracles, he would never come out of the room a cessationist". Jack Deere

Hard Cessationism – The view that miraculous sign gifts ceased with the death of the last apostle and the completion of the New Testament. Therefore, God does not speak directly to people today. Adherents; Charles Hodge John MacArthur, majority of Church History. this has been the orthodox position of the Church since the 2nd century. Eph. 2:19-20; 2 Corth. 12:12; Heb. 1:3-4. Miracles and wonders always point back to the authority of the giver. Christ is the author and gave His authority to the Apostles. To bring glory to God, and to establish Christ's authority. The gift of apostleship is no longer given. The apostles could use them at anytime to authenticate their message. A prophet must establish himself as a spokesperson of God, Did he predict any future events, authentic miracles, signs of wonders in the sky? If one is to speak for God he is the mouthpiece for God. Deut. 18:20-22.

If one were to examine the Scripture closely, it becomes evident that God's direct intervention through prophecy and supernatural signs and wonders was not the norm as it may seem. The Bible, as theological history (not exhaustive history), only records the times when God does intervene, thereby giving the impression that God's direct encounters through prophets, dreams visions, etc, are God's modus operaudi when they are not.

In early church history most Christian believed that the signs and wonders had ceased. They had no agenda, they believed that it just died out. These are the same people who would have qualified as a prophet but claimed they were not.

The early church had no N.T. but the words of the apostles and Christ for their foundation for signs and wonders.

The Bible implicitly supports the idea that the supernatural sign gifts were for the establishment of the Church era.

Soft Cessationism – The view that the miraculous signs could still be given today, but believers need to be careful about outright acceptance of people's claims of possession. Neither side's arguments are conclusive. We must therefore proceed with great caution. While it may be true that Church history has not seen the continuation of God speaking directly, this does not mean that it is not possible.

Those who adhere to a futuristic interpretation of Revelation must concede that there are going to be prophets in the future as represented by the Two Witnesses (Rev. 11:3) possibly, the 144,000 Israelites (Rev. 7:4), Therefore, we must be open to further direct revelation from God.

Guiding Principles:

God's Word is not something to be trifled with (Ex. 20:7).

If you are a prophet you must show me convincing signs of a prophet (Deut. 18:15-22).

If you are a prophet you must have orthodox theology (Deut. 13:1-3).

If someone believes that they have a word from the Lord, they had better be certain and be ready to live according to the consequences if it turns out false.

God is very much alive. Christ is alive. The Holy Spirit indwells those who believe in Jesus as the only son of God and accepts Him as their Savior. Why would God not speak with any one He chooses?

While I have been grieving for my only son who passed in March of 2011, there have been many times that I have prayed for "the peace which passes all understanding." Every time I have asked for it, the peace has been given. Then there are times while worshiping that the Holy Spirit makes His presence known through my body. Usually it is a tingling that starts at the top of my head and runs down through me - often happening during the singing of a hymn in church.

I don't believe in coincidence. I am certain that God has been showing me the answers to personal questions about who my birth father is through much of my life. Soon I should have DNA evidence that shows what I believe God has already shown me. If we pay attention to the Holy Spirit, we can hear from God. We were meant to hear from Him through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

As for being an apostle, today this simply means that a person is sent to testify about the Word of God in the Holy Bible. As I just said, I don't believe in coincidence. Recently, I had a very obvious sign that actually reinforced what I was hearing fro...

Recently, I had a very obvious sign that actually reinforced what I was hearing from the Holy Spirit prior to my son's death, that my ministry is to be pastoral care, particularly of the elderly. God expects me to be obedient to His will in this. He couldn't make it any clearer to me. Does this mean that I am an apostle? Not yet, but perhaps soon. God will direct my steps as I become more in tune with the Holy Spirit.

If God truly speaks to you directly than the Bible is NOT complete (the canon of scripture). If all the sign gifts are still for today and God is still working through His Porphets. Then when have you seen anyone raised from the dead. I would like to know who in this generation is a Prophet? Let's not read into the Bible what is NOT their.

I am especially angry at those of the elb to erace what I have to say . in this venue. 1st, Gos soes not use the Prophets any mpore. The day of the Prophets ended with the resurrection of Jesus Christ. They are unecessary. If you can't trust Jesus and his offer then what good are Prophets? Jesus was the reason for these men';s message over the years.
Personally, I think God whispers loudly at times. The Constitution of the United States. and two negative lessons Hitler who taught the World the meaning of Evil and the Present President of the United States to teach Aerica what pure Evil really is.......... All this before The Coming of Satan on the 1st white hirse to save us from Jesus. He will fool the public and convert all to his Chrisitianity.
God forestall this from us and give us a period more to save soulls emocrats have fed the poor on America's money and there is no more.

Big words for me Yaz. I truly believe that all that the Disciples did can still be done. I knew a Pastor that did some miracles years ago. I believe, as the Bible says, that there is a 'falling away'. If the elect scarcely be saved.........

Since I've experienced miracles of healing, provision, revelation, wisdom, etc, I am deeply concluded that Yahweh-God/Father, in the Name of Yeshua (Aramaic)/Jesus (English), by the Anointing/Power of The Holy Spirit, unified together being One, is still getting our attention. For some of us, more importantly, He's keeping our attention.

My brother. It's not the amount of your faith that counts but it's how much you believe He is faithful, that enables you to believe. It's all about God and what you know and believe about Him. It's NEVER about you or what you believe about yourself.

Actually i believe that God never spoke through any of these people, but they spoke *for him* (as if he spoke through them) to fulfil their own ends.
Whether or not there is a creator does not come into play in this argument if you wish to argue with me.

You can't prove directly the existences of other minds, the existence of the material universe or the reliability of our memories. Our ultimate foundational starting point in our thinking process is either the finite-self or God. If you start with the finite-self, the 'I' then how can you know anything other than your self?

As a Christian I begin with the sovereign God of the Scriptures, who is foundational for all things. God is the source of all possibilities and therefore all true knowledge. The question is how can you have valid knowledge of anything in a universe not govern by God? It is the basic question concerning your epistemology.
