We’ve heard of petty crime, but this is ridiculous.

A 22-year-old homeless Dallas man, Marquis Marsh, is in jail on $3,500 bail after being arrested on robbery charges for allegedly stealing six chicken nuggets from a Wendy’s. The Dallas Morning News reported that Marsh walked into the restaurant on Sunday, hopped the counter, grabbed the nuggets and then made a run for it.

When the manager tried to block his exit, Marsh allegedly punched him several times in the head before fleeing on foot. Officers gave chase down the street and eventually arrested Marsh, who reportedly shouted, “I paid for those nuggets!”

The value of the allegedly purloined poultry chunks? $1.20.

Do you think Marsh deserves to be jailed and charged for robbery?

This is more than robbery. It's also ASSAULT! He wont have to worry now because the tax payers will feed him now. And the big guy in cell 15 will make him his bitch! *LMAO*

He shouldn't have touched the manager. So now he is a thief and will have an assault
charge on him. He couldn't have been too hungry if he had the strength to pop a knot on the managers head.

well the fact is he committed a crime- and add assault to it also.
the real question is does the punishment fit the crime?
But look at it this way- being he's homeless- in jail he'll get 3 hots and a cot.
of course of TAXPAYERS Dime though.

What I don't understand is why he didn't ask for the nuggets. Maybe they wouldn't have given them to him, but he could have asked first. But then he punched the manager for doing his job. Maybe his hunger pushed him that far, I don't know, but it seems to me that he could have made a different choice.

If you are hungry, first swallow your pride. The manager isn't obligated to let you get away with stealing, even if you're hungry, but as a human being, if someone asks you for food (not money), why would you hesitate? Maybe the judge will show mercy on the man.

He should get assault charges and spend some time in jail for that. He'll get something to eat. But I think the bail is rediculous for stealing 6 nuggets that cost $1.20.

petty crime does not deserve time esp. when it comes to food and homeless ppl

You're forgetting the assault. He wouldn't have ran if he paid for them. At least where he is now he will get fed...

First of all, what kind of manager would block someone for stealing 6 Chicken Nuggets, you got a whole host of idiots here, the manager for trying to stop someone over lousy nuggets, a thief assaulting the manager over chicken nuggets and the Police for arresting someone over chicken nuggets. This has circus written all over it.
  • Topcoun... Account... 2010/05/30 09:19:24
If the manager wasn't there to stop every person who needed 6 free nuggets then there would be no more Wendy's. It's part of capitalism, the people at Wendy's work there to make money on what is spent on their products. It is embarrassing to have to ask for food but it is definitely more honorable than stealing it.

I'm not saying the thief was right, but, really would you put yourself in direct harm to stop someone stealing 6 chicken nuggets?
  • Topcoun... Account... 2010/05/31 06:39:17
If you knew you could walk into the grocery store and walk out with a gallon of milk without anyone attempting to stop you, would you do it? How many people would do it if they saw you get away with it?
It would not be fair to allow people to come in and have free nuggets if the manager makes everyone else pay for them. Watching someone walk away with the stolen goods is the same as giving them away.

You have to pick your battles carefully, the manager could of just had the guy arrested, instead he got his face bashed in over 6 nuggets, is stopping petty theft worth risking bodily harm to yourself or perhaps getting killed over? There are a lot of things worth fighting for but stopping a thief from stealing 6 chicken nuggets is not one of those.
  • BrittanyXD Topcoun... 2010/05/31 02:45:18
Difference is more people pay for them and this guy didnt have money.

Stop phrasing the questions wrong ! If he knocked over the register and punched the manager then his crime was NOT stealing chicken nuggets.
  • CoercibleGerm 2010/05/29 21:19:06
Yes, don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
Had he not decided to knock over the cash register and punch the manager in the face, he'd be facing some form of petty theft instead. His actions fit the description of robbery under Texas law.
§ 29.02. ROBBERY. (a) A person commits an offense if, in
the course of committing theft as defined in Chapter 31 and with
intent to obtain or maintain control of the property, he:
    (1) intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly causes
    bodily injury to another; or
    (2) intentionally or knowingly threatens or places
another in fear of imminent bodily injury or death.
    (b) An offense under this section is a felony of the second

While it may be sad that he's homeless and hungry, that doesn't excuse him from the consequences of his actions.

That's ridiculous, he should have to do some time, but it was a loss of $1.20. BUT, the fact that he punched the manager in the head seven times does make it iffy if they should let him go or not.

    Theft - stealing of items.
Robbery - committing an assault or other crime while in the process of thieving.

This guy must still be a kid.. I wonder what happened to his parents and what they did to him to leave him like this.

wall street crooks can steal over $11 billion from investors retirement accounts & get 30 days community service but someone steals a loaf of bread because of hunger & we are talking prison time.

    what's wrong with this picture?

part of a free democracy are penalties that fit the crime. that does not exist in america. never has. never will.

It was a simple theft, that shouldn't have landed him in jail. When he punched the Mgr. several times, the assault changed the crime to Robbery. He should be in jail. If he is willing to beat someone over a $ 1.20's worth of chicken, what do you think he would do for a $ 1,000.00. He is a danger to the public, and belongs behide bars. Oh if he ran from the Police, he also resisted arrest.

Yeah, er, do you think he would be in as much trouble if he'd just stolen the nuggets? He punched someone in the freakin' head. As far as I'm concerned, that was his crime.

Since you don't mention anything about the assault,I'd have to say it's a petty crime as far as the nuggets are in question. My guess is the bail was set that high because of the assualt...if that's the case then it would make more sense.

sorry on this one I reserve my right to be conservative, the system has obviously not done a great job of helping this man before the great nugget caper. however, that does not justify the behavior. I would have been more inclined to sympathize with him if he was in a soup kitchen and told he was not going to be given any food, then assaulted someone. for denying him food, for no good reason. but come on Dallas does not have soup kitchens or food for homeless programs i find that hard to believe. granted being homeless and without has it's share of issues, but that does not justify hurting someone, and taking part in criminal acts. ooh by the way I think as part of his sentence he should have to eat chicken blobs/ nuggets three meals a day until he is released at least for the main course. he can have other things on the side

Regardless of what was stolen & what the value was, he still stole. A crime is a crime & he should be punished. Plus, he hit the manager.
