You all know him. The cocky, oil-rich president of Venezuela. His fiery rhetoric and sharp criticism of American Imperialism is well-known. Some say that he, not unlike other Middle East leaders, hates us for our freedoms. But it wasn't always that way.

Back when the oligarchy and the right-wing ruled Venezuela there was more diplomacy and trade between both countries. While a few had all the wealth, the people STARVED.

When Chavez was elected he promised a radical shift to the left. He nationalized the oil industry and used its MASSIVE profits to implement social programs that lifted MILLIONS out of poverty. He defied the powers-that-be including the IMF.

In 2002 the U.S. was involved in and supported the coup that tried to kill Chavez, overthrow his govt and replace him with IMF puppet Pedro Carmona.

The military refused to execute the president and the people took to the street DEMANDING their democratically-elected president be allowed to finish his term. The puppet president Carmona sent the military at the people, but they REFUSED to kill their own. Chavez later returned to take his place as sitting president and exiled the IMF puppet.

Since they tried to kill him, Chavez has shifted further to the left embracing other countries like Cuba, Iran, Russia and China.

This has led me to 2 questions:
Does Chavez hate our 'nosy neighbor' foreign policy?
or
Does Chavez hate us for our FREEDOMS??!!

Stupid liberals, which is a polite term for socialist, lets start calling them what they are. Stupid socialists will back him out of some deluded romantic notion that sucking on the fiscal teat of the better off, instead of doing any hard work themselves is a good way of life.

Hugo Chavez preaches hate about the US because it makes him look powerful in his piss poor country. If the US stopped buying Venezuelan crude and taxed the millions he funnels out through the Venezuelan Oil Corp better known here as CITGO his country would teeter on the edge. Sometimes I think the US should shut his oil exports off just to let him know we know where he is.

Lots of people from different places have a wide and well known distaste for America.
Lot's of Americans just love to say "They hate us because of our freedom!!" without thinking that there are probably actually VERY legitimate reasons why people dislike our country and it's people.

You don't want to answer my question? What legitamate reasons do people in other countries have to hate the US. Why won't you answer a simple question. You said they have legitimate reasons, what are they. Do not presume to know about someone?

    You seriously don't know?

Oil wars, consumerism, nosiness, UN issues, hollywood, ignorance, false entitlement, overly religious/conservative people, wealth, WMDs, and plenty of other things. I mean really, saying "Oh they hate our freedom" is the equivalent of an ugly girl saying "Oh those girls hate me because I'm beautiful"...when really, she's just a dick

If these people effect our country which CHavez does why would we not say something. Do you know how Chavez is trying to effect politics all over South America by buying favors with his oil money and letting his own people suffer. My family is in Peru and I know people in South America that have been very negatively effected by Chavez!

Why would he hate one of his best customers we get a third of our oil from him.
When an estimated 400,000 to 600,000 persons participated in a march in downtown Caracas to demand President Chavez's resignation, gunfire broke out, resulting in as many as 18 deaths and more than 100 injuries on both sides. Military officers took President Chavez into custody, and business leader Pedro Carmona swore himself in as interim President. Less than 2 days later, military troops loyal to Chavez returned him to power. Opposition leaders called a national work stoppage on December 2, 2002. Strikers protested the government and called for the resignation of President Chavez. The oil sector joined other sectors of the economy and effectively shut down all economic activity for a month. The strike formally ended in February 2003 as political opponents of Chavez changed tactics, focusing on a recall referendum to revoke the mandate of the president.

On August 15, 2007, President Chavez proposed a package of constitutional reforms, including measures that allowed indefinite presidential re-election, a reorganization of the geographic boundaries of government, and a redefinition of private property. On December 2, 2007, the proposed reforms were narrowly defeated in a public referendum. President Chavez has since passed some of the changes defeated in the referendum by presidential decree or legislation. Indeed, Chavez organized a vote on a constitutional amendment to end term limits for all elected officials, which was approved on February 15, 2009.

He did not nationalize oil until a few years ago after he used his presidential power to change how the electoral college was selected his staff now selects who gets to be in the electoral college right after that they ended the term limits and made him 'presidentfor life' just as Castro did in Cuba. These heroes always end up becoming the thing they fought against ...DICTATORS.

Chavez is a Communist dictator this article is wrong in so many ways! If he hated us why is Citgo still sending oil to USA? there is no reason, It is a fully nationalized company. But yet he still does. Why?

I don't know if anybody else has noticed this, but our only reliable oil producing ally is Saudi Arabia. That is where almost all of the 9/11 terrorists are reputed to have come from.

How many troops did they send to Iraq or Afghanistan ? I believe it was the same number that Israel sent.

I think that we need to reassess our foreign policy.

During the cold war the US undertook an aggressive policy to preserve far right regimes within Latin America, often directly opposing democratically elected governments. Take for example the the Guatemalan Coup of 1954.

It is understandable given our history and current activities in the region why individuals may be pessimistic of our intentions there.
