Do you vote more for the person or the party they represent?

You!

When you vote for a new president/prime minister, you're voting both for an individual and for their party. I recently watched a news article that claimed that in the US, people vote more for the individual where-as in Europe, it's the party that matters more.

So I'm wondering, when you place your vote in an election, are you voting more for the person or for the party they represent? (IE if you decide to vote for Romney (for example), are you voting more for Romney or for the Republican party?)

Which is why I'm neither a Democrat nor a Republican. Neither one of them uses common sense anymore, and the presidential candidates they put forth don't represent the people's beliefs... only their own lunacy.

I try to " educate myself " on the people who are running ( above my party ) .

I have found that - In National Races , we NEVER get a person on the ticket that I really support . The " Good Ones " never make it to the BIG SHOW and it is always The Lesser Of Two Evils Thing .......... just like in " 08 " . McCain was a RINO and Obama , is a SOCIALIST with MARXIST leanings . Obama got elected by " Running Against BUSH ? WTF ? While I didn't like McCain ............... he was the Lesser Of Two Evils ( and NOTHING like Bush ) .
Obama on the other hand Had " NO PAST " that we were allowed to see - AND - NO RECORD ! He was elected because he was UNKNOWN ! - WTF ?
The LAST person that I REALLY liked was Reagan ( He SAVED us from certain bankrupcy under Carter ) .
I try to vote for people that " I Know Something About " . WE KNOW PLENTY about Obama now , And It Ain't Good ! Romney certainly ain't MY pick of the litter ( he is a MODERATE , at best ) but compared to Obama , He Is A Saint !
Romney Would / Could make America prosperous again . He is Honest and VERY Generous , giving away millions of dollars to charity while working for FREE . He is VERY business savy ( unlike Obama , who it seems is DELIBERATELY running America into the ground ) . Romney Could Bring Americ...

He is VERY business savy ( unlike Obama , who it seems is DELIBERATELY running America into the ground ) . Romney Could Bring America BACK FROM THE BRINK Just As Reagan Did !
His problem is ( because he is Mormon / religous ) , he is LOW KEY and prefers to focus on The Economy and avoid Personal Attacks . Obama is TELLING LIE AFTER LIE while Romney " Turns The Other Cheek " ! If he does not start " Calling Out " Obama , I fear for the worst .

I Am A LIBERTARIAN / Conservative for the record - AND - have voted for BOTH parties in the past ( but NEVER for POTUS ). I voted for a Democrat for Governor in the past , just depends on their views on certain RIGHTS guaranteed under the Constitution .

Normally I would consider the person more than the party. But now that I have seen that the Democrats would die for the likes of an Obama, I will never vote Democrat again, ever. I have lost all respect for that party.

It is easier to know a party than a person. Democrats are collectively anti-gun and aggressively so, giving me an easy choice against them. That is regardless whether the individual is pro-gun or not. A Democrat gun rights supporter should choose his friends more carefully. A Republican soft or worse on gun rights is typically overruled by the GOP caucus.

I have voted for Republicans and Democrats in local and state elections. I also know more about them and issues they suppport, especially at the local level.

I intensely dislike presidential elections because of all the political hate fueled by the hyper mass media . It is very difficult to know the truth and find solid reporting. There is no honor whatsoever in the American media. It is also time consuming to research bills and voting records, although necessary.

The current presidential campaign is disappointing in many ways. Romney's campaign is about nothing. His own supporters tell him to take a stand on something. He speaks in passionate generalities . Obama's campaign is about Romney's time at Bain. Meanwhile 1 in 6 Americans are at or are approaching the poverty line and we just had yet another mass killing.

Ben, despite what they claim, my experience has been that most of my fellow Americans are hard-core idealogues when they go to the polls. Most of those who claim to be 'moderates' or 'independents' are blowin' smoke. I've been known to vote for the occasional Democrat (Daniel Moynihan, Ed Koch), but I tend to vote for conservatives.

You haven't been here that long, but if you research the political questions and answers here on SH, I think you'll quickly arrive at the conclusion most of us pretty much follow the party line in our thinking. I'll probably draw at least a handful of HEAT rounds over this from those supposed "independents", but their rhetoric alone will illustrate my point.

The other common feature of our elections is that far too many Americans can't name their current 3 Congress-critters (2 Senators, 1 Representative) if you ask 'em and have no clue as to what issues they actually campaigned on or their voting record since taking office. They walked in, punched a card, or pulled a lever, or touched a block on a screen without any real cognizance of what was going on - they liked the candidates' looks, they liked the candidates' speaking styles, the candidates vowed to 'gore the other guy's ox' not theirs, the candidates promised 'em 'something for nothing', they felt the candidates 'were just like me', or they just loved the taste of the snake oil they were being sold.

It's a bit of both, actually. I am a Conservative and registered Republican, but I would never sacrifice my moral and core beliefs in an effort to blindly vote for politicians that belong to the Republican party as well.

For example, I would never vote for politicians that have a record of be dishonest or inept under any circumstances, even if they claim to be a Republican and/or run for office on a Republican platform.

Abortion, the right to Keep and Bear Arms, use of the Death Penalty, freedom speech and religion, Racism, Supporting our Military and it's Soldiers can be deal-breakers also due to the fact that my beliefs in, about, and/or towards them run deep and do not waver.

Having said that, I would also like to state that although I have had to refrain from voting a Republican into office for some of and/or all of the above reasons, it is a rare occurrence.

The majority of Conservatives and Republicans share my beliefs, and in turn, have my vote and my support.

Baxter, it's disappointing when I hear that someone doesn't vote.

I want you to imagine something. You are in a prision and one day you go to take your shower as usual. As you soap up you realise that it is very quite. You get the soap out of your eyes and see that you are surrounded by several big naked inmates and there is no doubt in your mind what is about to happen. You, my friend are about to be brutally gang raped!

What do you do????? As a regular voter I can tell you exactly what you should do. You quickly figure out which of the inmates is the meanest toughest of the bunch and you grab him by the ears and french kiss him, putting as much of your toung down his throat as possible! You then loudly exclaim 'I am YOUR bitch!

That is why you should vote my friend. You are going to get SCREWED, YOU MAY AS WELL PICK THE ONE WHO IS GOING TO DO IT!!!!!!!

I have a core philosophy that overrides the candidate. I'm conservative and could never vote for a liberal, even if my "liar", er I mean candidate is a scoundrel, which they all are on both sides.

I used to vote more for the individual than party but as the democratic party has become more and more hostile to traditional American values, I find myself not voting FOR a certain party rather, AGAINST any democratic party candidate.

I've voted for Democrats, Republicans, and Libertarians before. In general, I have a pretty low opinion of all three of those parties, but every once in a while, a shining example of a *good* Democrat, Republican, or Libertarian comes along and makes me reassess my preconceptions.
