Ghettos can be populated by any people. By calling someone "ghetto," you're saying that they are acting in a manner that is uneducated and uncouth. At least, that's my opinion.

now the link between poverty and "bad" is something that i take issue with since i've transitioned from a "poor college student" to a "poor person".

    wikipedia says:

the term 'ghetto' was originally used to refer to the Venetian Ghetto in Venice, Italy where Jews were forced to live. The word "ghetto" actually comes from the word "getto" or "gheto", which means slag in Venetian, and was used in this sense in a reference to a foundry where slag was stored located on the same island as the area of Jewish confinement.[2] An alternative etymology is from Italian borghetto, diminutive of borgo ‘borough’. [3]

The corresponding German term was Judengasse (lit. Jew's Lane) known as the Jewish Quarter.

e term came into widespread use in Ghettos in occupied Europe 1939-1944 where the Jews were required to live prior to their transportation to concentration and death camps.

The definition of "ghetto" still has a similar meaning, but referring to broader range of social situations, such as any poverty-stricken urban area.

Depending on what city you are in the populations who actually live in ghettos are of many different races, whites included. Being poor and having no place else to live but in the slums in not unique to any certain race.

I know I have heard of the Warsaw ghettos. I always thought that was a part of that city but I have not been there so I don't know. I believe there was an event called the Warsaw uprising. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... and wikipedia makes reference to the Warsaw ghetto uprising as well. Ghetto must be a Latin, Italian word or something that became part of the mainstream vocabulary.

I thought the concentration camps were like Auschwitz, etc.

When we say "Trailer Park Trash" we know of whom we are speaking.

I think the word "Ghetto" has the potential to be used in a racist way.

"Did ya learn that in the ghetto??", I think it could be used to degrade people.

Similar words are "Favelas" in Brazil, we have the word "Shanty towns" but ghetto sounds a bit bleak.

Karamel: is there any part of a town you might call a "ghetto"? I've lived in Dallas, wouldn't quite call any part of that town a ghetto. Then there is Chicago and maybe that is where they say there are ghettos. I don't know.

Oh, and Hispanics sometimes have the word "Barrio".

Another word is "Slum" and I wouldn't want to be from that.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

The largest slum in the world is Kibera in Nairobi Kenya. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
