Barack Obama made headlines Friday as he stated that his administration will no longer deport young illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. when they were children. His announcement, as expected, was met with part-joy and part-skepticism -- as well as a heckler who constantly kept interrupting the president as he spoke.
"These are young people who study in our schools, they play in our neighborhoods, they're friends with our kids, they pledge allegiance to our flag. They are Americans in their heart, in their minds, in every single way but one: on paper," the president said in his speech Friday morning. But he was also quick to add that this is not a permanent answer. "This is not amnesty. This is not immunity. This is not a path to citizenship... It's not a permanent fix," Obama said. Do you think the U.S. should stop deporting young immigrants?
1. Come here legally
2. Learn English
3. Get a job
4. Stay out of trouble
5. Assimilate into American society
Sounds pretty basic, doesn't it? I'm certain you agree.
It's great you know some of their language because it helps get over their broken English.
Also, many critics on this issue have never themselves deigned to learn a foreign language, save as much needed to get through high school (if it's even still a requirement) and therefore have no clue about the difficulties involved.
They certainly couldn't know how much stress is involved in opening your mouth and asking for directions for the first time in a new language.
Which is why many Hispanic immigrants *understand* a whole lot more English than you'll ever hear them speak.
Yes, we have a population problem. Our economy sucks. But these are PEOPLE. People who grew up just like us, and the only difference is that their parents brought them here and raised them as Americans. They've known no other life. We need to make them citizens on paper, have them pay taxes, contribute back to the community, etc.
If we don't want illegals to drain our resources, we need to let them take jobs and pay taxes that give back to the community they grew up in. It's not as simple as that, but that seems like a pretty good solution to me.
ALL of our ancestors were immigrants, unless you're Native American (and even then, there's reasonable evidence that they traveled to America and did not rise up in this country.) Thus, to some degree or another, we are all the children of immigrants. We are the children of immigrants who came and slaughtered and enslaved the immigrants who had lived here first, and we are the children of immigran...

These people have just as much right to be here as we do. The question is-- will we welcome them, or will we push and shove and make it impossible for them to contribute?
Most Americans don't want the jobs they're willing to take.
"many of them are drug dealers and criminals"
Yes, but that's a separate issue. Most of these immigrants are good people. The drugs and gangs come when conditions are bad and they have no alternatives. Give them alternatives, and you will see fewer of them being pulled in.
MS13 was a gang that was built in response to OTHER gangs that were attacking Salvadorian immigrants. That tells you that there's another underlying problem. Yes, MS13 are criminals and there is no justification for their actions-- from murder to selling meth to children-- but their origins lie in a lack of acceptance and opportunity for the immigrants who make up their membership. Think about that. They rose out of harsh conditions, and then became established, and that's why they're so widespread and out of control now. That's why they've been able to establish their own cultural niche wherever they go.
It's not because there's something wrong with immigrants in general. I think it's reasonable to say that if we treated immigrants better, they would treat us better. It's because our response is to shun, threaten, and tell them to go home, rather than welcome them. If they didn't feel persecuted or as though they had few options, you would see an enormous decrease in gang and drug and criminal activity.
You'd better care about what caused MS13, or you're doomed to have more of them REGARDLESS of whether you allow immigrants in or not.
We bring immigrants in and then tell them to fend for themselves. We don't teach them about our culture, we don't show them the opportunities, we just throw them in without really giving them a chance to understand what it means to be an American. Yes, they pass a test, but it doesn't help enough. And then we have people who hate immigrants and try to run them out of town.
The hostility will breed more hostility. Cease to be hostile to them, welcome them as people, and you will see them offer prosperity. Most of them are hard workers, and understand and value that. Let them show it.
Mestizos came here from Spain and Indians crossed the Aleutians (from Siberia) before they were Islands, and long before any of them Spaniards did. There was no rule of law, until we European-Americans settled this land (and by the way, we BOUGHT Manhattan and much more of this Nation from both of them long before we were forced into war - nothing illegal about that, and as for the warring, show me ANY Nation that was not borne out of war, you will not find a single one). We had EVERY Right to settle this Nation, and settle it we did. Much of my forefathers arrived in this land LEGALLY from Ellis Island, but I also come from Colonial American stock and in fact, I am ALSO part of 'Native American' descent as well through my dad's family. And just because these Southern-Americans #ucked themselves over centuries and centuries ago, being heathen barbarians while we worked our asses off to set up a prosperous Nation with the rule of law, is tough titty! So your point?
A. "Mestizos" did NOT come from Spain. (Where exactly did you learn that??)
B. Part Native American descent? Then you ARE a mestizo.
C. EVERY Right to settle this Nation through usurpation and genocide, right?
And no, they DID NOT. The people who came from Spain were Spaniards --i.e., European descendents of the Visigoths -- according to any book you'll find in or out of the schools.
Actually, I'm surprised you can read.
baloney!! Describe an American!! You can't! The only thing Americans have in common is their citizenship!!! If you don't like Americans then please feel free to leave anytime!! Adios!! As for Reagan, I won't insult his memory by responding to your ignorant remark! He was a Christian and genuine in his faith therefore racism would not have been part of his unquestionable character. Sorry I couldn't say the same about yours
When you cross the border, you're breaking a law and by rewarding them citizenship, you're enabling them to break the law your country set in place to protect the rights of its citizens.
But the difference between my other ancestors and current illegal immigrants is that my ancestors entered legally and/or entered during a time before America was an establish country and the laws were in place. My friend's dad immigrated over from Cambodia and I'm happy to have him over here. He entered legally and he's now an American citizen.
"this is the earth everyone should be allowed to travel anywhere they want to."
So...I should be allowed to trespass on private property, then, right? Because damn the laws. It may be illegal, but it's the Earth...the only difference is that I will be arrested.
You can't be in favor of illegal immigration and against trespassing because they're essentially the same thing. The American government and people own America and when people illegally immigrate here, they are trespassing.
