Do You Think the U.S. Should Stop Deporting Young Immigrants? (Obama Does)

Barack Obama made headlines Friday as he stated that his administration will no longer deport young illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. when they were children. His announcement, as expected, was met with part-joy and part-skepticism -- as well as a heckler who constantly kept interrupting the president as he spoke.

"These are young people who study in our schools, they play in our neighborhoods, they're friends with our kids, they pledge allegiance to our flag. They are Americans in their heart, in their minds, in every single way but one: on paper," the president said in his speech Friday morning. But he was also quick to add that this is not a permanent answer. "This is not amnesty. This is not immunity. This is not a path to citizenship... It's not a permanent fix," Obama said. Do you think the U.S. should stop deporting young immigrants?

Anyone in this country illegally, should be deported at once! Do not take my tax dollars and use them to care for, or educate them.

youre talking about tax money being taken away. Next time check who are the ones collecting their unemployment checks, medicaid benefits , "disability" checks and food stamps. because the last time i checked... illegals cannot get these benefits. Illegals are not taking no body's jobs. theyre just doing the jobs that everyone else is too lazy to get. and they do pay their taxes. so next time get your facts straight and check where your money is really going. Its going to people that CAN work for the US.. that are born CITIZENS of this country but are too lazy to get off of their butts to make a living and would rather sit at home collecting FREE money from the govt.

Why do you encourage people that break the rule of law? Fine...if they are hard working people...do what all the other immigrants must do....enter the country in a "legal" fashion...pretty simple! Matters not how you or I "feel". I actually know of only one illegal person. He was coming to the church I go to for a while. I make no exception for him either. He was a very hard worker..but....he was here illegally! We have "laws" for a reason, and just because we can come up with good excuses why we should not obey them, doesn't make it right to break that law!

Ok people need to stop with this hatred towards people they don't understand. These immigrants that come over obviously want the best for their children, wouldn't you if your home country was not a safe environment for them? I am a daughter of former illegal immigrants, but they worked hard so they could get their papers and I can have a good life, they pay their taxes, they work hard just like most American citizens. And now I work hard too. I have a higher GPA than most classmates, I do community service, I'm a good person despite my background. It just makes me mad when you automatically see people judging others based on their background. Try to be understanding, reasonable, moral people.

I would not have invaded by sneaking over the border in the night and risking the lives of my children and having to worry about getting caught the rest of my life. There is a front door to our country and anyone that does not use the front door should be considered invaders and dealt with properly. I have family that immigrated to the United States, it took several years and going to school to assimilate but it was done legally.

It really has nothing to do with their background, and it is not hatred toward a group of people. It has to do with what was illegally perpetrated, the act of crossing the border and living here illegally. The sins of the fathers effect, so to speak. Yes, the children are innocent, but their parents broke laws that affect the entire family. Would you have the children be allowed to remain and the parents be deported back to their country of origin? Which is more "fair" or "humane"? No, the entire family, nuclear and extended, would have to remain for the sake of preserving the family. I will admit that there are certain groups that, due their bellicose rants, "anti-imperialis/colonialism" stance (It is an old Communist tactic) and hatred of persons of Western European ethnicity, elicit a negative reaction in the formerly majority culture. Their racism begets racism. Their anti-Americanism begets intolerance on the part of those who otherwise would welcome them.

I am glad your parents rectified their status and became citizens. The truth is, most of the illegals will never assimilate even if given citizenship. I know of legal families that have not learned English in four generations. There was never a need to. There was a time when one would go to a store or walk ...

There was a time when one would go to a store or walk in town, and immigrants would be speaking English amongst themselves. They were proud to be here, and wanted to adopt their new home fully. That is no longer the case. We are already a dual language nation, and it has happened gradually and with little fanfare.

tough one, it seems to depend on the context of the issue/question, since young children are not aware of many societal norms or governments, laws, etc., should they be held individually responsible for the actions of their parents? On a broader scale; then would punishing children seperately for their parents actions create a precedent to allow the children of accused parents to be punished (or threatened punishment) separately from the parent, say as a means to force a plea or confession from the parent by zealous prosecutors?

The children brought here at a very early age are in a unique situation. If they choose to stay would be something that should be up to the legal citizens of the United States to decide. However; their parents should be deported for illegal immigration as per our laws on the books. The Constitution does not afford the President to ignore our laws and make his own.

In general I will agree in that very slim context, yet as we have all seen historically once a well meaning precedent is set, frequently it does eventually get stretched to becoming abused, for or against the original intention, In the presumed context of this question, the child (presumably now older) should be given a method to apply for citizenship, possibly with some sort of special circumstances criteria. Our government has frequently created "special circumstances" criteria in many laws and administrative procedure, (including immigration) but a broad blanket ruling has too great a potential for abuse by either side of this issue.

There is only one way to start developing a real immigration policy. That is to CLOSE the southern boarder. No one north, no one south. Kill their tourism until they secure their side o the border. You can't selectively decide unilaterally who stays and who goes. If these students, graduates and their families are interested in correcting their familial illegal acts, they must return to their country of origin and apply like anyone else. Those who are educated and have the required skills needed by our county to got to the top of the list, let them go there otherwise, take your proper place in the line. If an employer hires an illegal, Let them be heavily fined and the employees be deported immediately. Should we give special preference to children of illegals? NO!!!

That would be only be legal votes, right. Not the 180,000 illegals that voted in Florida using the identities of dead Americans to register. That's just one State, let's clean up the political system and have a true and honest election.

180,000 is a bizarrely off figure, the Attorney General proposed purging only 2,600 names on his now infamous list. In Lee County Florida, nearly 100 person had requested to be removed from jury duty as they were not eligible citizens, turns out on comparing that list to voter's lists, about half had registered to vote and actually voted, is this a good thing? Considering that some national elective offices have been determined by well under 100 votes, I think not.

The kids didn't choose to do anything illegal, their parents did. It's like convicting a crack baby of drug abuse. It isn't fair. I know it can pose problems with population, etc. but we can handle them. Justice is more important.

Not sure what a 12, 14 or even 16 year old child could do about it, even if they did know. Until they are of age, there is nothing that can be done by them.

For all those who are so hateful and bigoted...1) YOUR ancestors were immigrants (unless you are 100% Native American). Unless you have papers in your hand showing their legal status upon arrival here, you don't know if they were legal or not.

    2) If the US deported all of the illegal immigrants, California and other heavy agriculture states would COLLAPSE. US citizens won't do the kind of farm work that immigrants will for the kind of pay they get and the agribiz corps won't pay more anyway...not without greatly increasing prices to the consumer. If you want everyone deported, who will pick your lettuce, strawberries, soybeans, oranges, etc? Better start planting a garden!

    3) While I agree some sort of reform should occur (I've come up with a preliminary idea myself), simply deporting them is not going to work...not for them and not for us.

    4) US signed a treaty (after the war THEY started, though they say the Mexicans started it-however it was USA that crossed the border with arms first) stating that Mexican citizens had the right to come to certain states freely (the ones they had previously inhabited, such as oh wow look at...

The US has been going back on its word every since...not really surprising. I believe it is named the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

Get over yourselves. Remember that really tall stone thing in NY? You know, the Statue of Liberty? The very symbol of our country? Yeah, remember her? Part of the poem ON THE STATUE says:
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Seems we forget about that when the people are any shade of brown.

2)f the US deported all of the illegal immigrants, California and other heavy agriculture states would COLLAPSE. I thought liberals didn't use fear mongering. Guess people were wrong.

    3) While I agree some sort of reform should occur (I've come up with a preliminary idea myself). We don't necessarily need reform. We just need action. It like not fixing that rusty pipe in your basement. One day it becomes an issue and you need to then redo the whole plumbing.

    4) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

It is all a matter of interpretation.

You do realize the poem was added at a later date as has been other plaques. I believe early 1900s 15 or so years after. The only thing originally inscribed was the date of the Declaration of Independence.

Read up on what the Statue of Liberty is about. There are many things that are the spirit of our country. First and foremost -Our constitution.

No fear-mongering used. Just facts. It matters not that the poem was added later. The fact is that it is there now and it means something.

Apparently it does. People want to take God out the Pledge of Allegiance because it wasn't there in the first place. People want to not include Christmas as a holiday.

Just because it was added 15 years latter doesn't mean it means what the statue was first created for...

Sure it is fear mongering.. Besides California is having troubles finding agricultural workers now... Strange how that is.. Like I stated fear mongering.

Send them AND THEIR parents HOME if they are here illegally. Illegal is CRIMINAL...
BTW... I WANT MY MONEY back for educating them, and FEEDING them and housing them and paying unemployment taxes for Americans who can't find a job because their Mom and Dad committed a CRIME crossing our border illegally.

Get over yourself and go pick your own lettuce. They aren't taking jobs that US citizens would do. YOU would NOT go out in a field at 5 AM and pick crops all day until 7 PM with MAYBE a lunch break, a portapotty IF YOU ARE LUCKY (otherwise you just have to cop a squat in a ditch) and maybe some water. Oh and all that for about $3 a day.

YOU keep skirting the issue here! Are they breaking the laws of this country? Do you believe in obeying laws, rules and regulations? If so...then we should all expect others to do so. If not....then YOU are acting as a legislator, judge and jury. If we all chose to obey only the laws we like, this country would be chaotic. Use a little logic please! (and stay consistant)

I am quite logical thank you. If you look at my other posts, I advocate for reform of the laws as they are now. Don't pop off before you read everything.
On another note, laws are broken all the time by people with money enough to buy themselves out of getting into trouble. If we hold immigrants and poor and middle class and everyone else to the laws and consequences for breaking them, then we must not allow others to get away with breaking the law just because they have money or corporations in their pockets.

This is not in the realm of the President. This is just grandstanding for the election. Congress is the only body that can pass laws to regulate Immigration. Congress needs to pass a comprehensive Immigration reform as soon as possible. All previously illegal alien immigrants need to be current on their taxes for as long as they have been in the US, have no convictions or currently charged for violent crimes - drug crimes - felonies (in any country), pay a substantial fine (at least $10,000) to resolve their "crimes" of illegal entering or remaining in the US, pass a test on English competency; sign a document pledging their allegiance to the US Constitution and renouncing any enemies of the US under penalty of perjury. If they committed ANY crime related to ID theft, forgery of government documents, use of a false drivers license, social security or tax ID number they should be immediately deported and not allowed to reenter the US for ten years and then only if they meet the other requirements. Finally, they must have a sponsor employer or US Citizen sponsor that will agree to be financially responsible for them and that the immigrant must not be eligible for any welfare, food stamps, AFDC, Medicaid or other government aid until they have worked and paid taxes for at least 5 years in the US. Or, they can just come here legally under the current laws on the books like most of the immigrants do.
