Question US

Do you think that Socialism can work?

swifty March 25, 2008 21:19:50

From each, according to his ability; to each, according to his need

    Not Einstein

    Yes

Good question, swifty. It is working in several countries, but I’m not Einstein and I don't see it being a feasible alternative in the USA in the near future. Did, however, want to post some info for you referencing health care in USA, as you seem to profess it is the best in the world:

    WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

    ASSESSES THE WORLD'S HEALTH SYSTEMS

The World Health Organization has carried out the first ever analysis of the world’s health systems. Using five performance indicators to measure health systems in 191 member states, it finds that France provides the best overall health care followed among major countries by Italy, Spain, Oman, Austria and Japan.

That is not true exactly in the Marxist model. Not they way it has been twisted but as in the Manfesto. It states from each according to his abilities to each according to his needs if you combine this with Marx's Heirachy of needs (Later borrowed and shortened by Maslow for his heirarchy of needs in Psychology)

By this we can see some people can help society more by being Doctors, Police, engineers etc and some do not have the ability so they are the people like trash collectors, retail sales food workers whatever. All of these are noble and needed occupations. So that once every member has their needs met equally a place to live, medical benefits, food for each meal etc then those that contribute more can and should be able to et more, A bigger house a bigger TV, etc But all members need to have the basics met equally

Headhunter...I was reading some salary information regarding Sweden recently and many people get paid quite well. For instance computer jobs pay $60K-$80K a year, doctors $150K-$200K, (actually higher in comparison to US average salaries for comparable jobs....and salaries increase with longevity and education. Sure they tax them 45-50%....but hell... I get taxed 35% now and I get none of the plethora of services that they do. And people have luxuries there...they drive Saabs...live in nice houses. It's not like living in an army barracks like I get the impression many believe.

Back in 88 we were in Monteal for a week. Peole dressed well ate well behave very well. Had womd to tomb Healthcare and education as far as they could go therough PhD level and professional degrees. A clean and efficient transportation system. And while we were the Montreal Jazz fest all over the city with many free events and even polite hookers. All for 42% tax rate. Not to shabby in my opinion. and that was just a little of what we saw theer in a week. Spoke to professional, hotel workers, waiter and buiness people not one complaint about anything. And I could buy Cuban cigars

Did you catch Sicko. You notice one that the hate was not out there the wau F9/11 was but also he gave a fair and balanced view of many other countries other than just the medical and we look shabby by comparison

I hear ya! When you go to these countries, there is not much different than here...except you don't see homeless veterans sleeping of grates on sidewalks to keep warm. They have malls (imagine that LOL) and people dress fashionably...not in the gray uniform naive people imagine. There are also many people that are quit well off. And you don't see them leaving. Look at all the musicians and movie stars that live in these socialist countries.

In Ireland, everyone is entitled to a free higher education. Most of these socialist countries have great education policies. Here we have people coming out of college with student loans to the tune of $150K...and then can't even get a job when they graduate.

First -- I disagree that your source is a good site to use to show explanations of the various forms of government -- it's very biased (towars some sort of libertarianism, I'd guess) and rather nutty as well. I would hope anyone answering this poll would take that into account when going there.

I know socialism can work, because it has worked in Scandinavia for decades. That's not, of course what you web site calls socialism, but it is socialism of the democratic variety. Taxes are high; that's absolutely true, but services are enormous as well -- you get what you pay for. There's not a wide disparity between incomes, so if you want to become a billionaire, you wouldn't like living there, but then, your chances of getting that much money here are infinitestimal anyway. That's one of the ways Americans are constantly led to vote against their own economic best interersts -- by falsely assuming vaste riches are just around the corner.

Anyway -- you question was could it work; my answer was yes, because it has and still is working.

Scandinavia is a very small assembly of nations that do not have the need to support a military. They do not need to defend themselves from outside aggressors because they are protected by the military of free capitalist nations such as the United States. That one fact alone negates that they are a TRUE socialist economy.

Were the Scandinavian nations forced to accept socialism or did they choose it for themselves?

The source site is a good reference for showing the various positions between socialism and capitalism, you may not understand it... especially the leap across the bottom of the circle which we are about to make.

Well -- first of all, Scandinavia is a region of small countries, not a small country. But I understand your drift, and it certainly is possible that our size and diversity will work against the success of socialism here. I doubt it, because to have a decent socialist government, you've got to have a pretty large bureaucracy, which we already have. Indeed, I would think our size and diversity would work against any sort of anarchy, unless you foresee the whole country breaking up into very small jurisdictions, in which case, your whole size thing gets thrown out the window anyway.

However, I just don't agree that your site is terribly good; it's very, very biased towards libertarian type thought, and completely confounds socialism with stalinism -- what most call communism. They are simply not the same thing.

I also disagree with they way they use the circle, even though I myself have been arguing that the political spectrum is a circle, not a line, for many years now. However, if it's a circle, with a little arc cut out, then the two sides that are coming together at that arc have to be fairly similar, else the circle metaphor is meaningless. And that's what happens there -- it's meaningless -- it just a line someone bent into a circle.

If they were using the circle image correctly, the left edge wouldn't be socialism, but left-wing anarchy, just as the right is correctly labeled right-wing anarchy. When you jump across that little arc, you don't even notice the difference much -- just as it should be. However, because, I suspect, they want to lay claim to the title anarcy, they refuse to recognize that anarchy has two political flavors -- the libertarian far right and the bomb-throwing far left. Both want no government, but for totally different reasons.

You have found me out. The site does lean to the Libertarian side promoting such ideas as:

    Small central government
    Lower Taxes
Abolishment of the FED and the control of currency by elected officials
Abolishment of the Internal Revenue Service (Flat Tax)
    Gold backed money
Strict adherence to the Constitution that founded this nation

    Pretty "nutty" stuff;

Where did I say Scandinavia was a small country?

I don't think a modified form of libertarianism is nutty (pure libertarianism is as idealist, as impossible as is any other extreme -- the state ain't gonna whither away, which is pretty much what both pure socialism and pure libertarianism look to -- they just word it differently) -- not for me but not nutty; however, that place is a bit on the nutty side, if only because of their format and because they confuse socialism with stalinism..

And I misread your comment about Scandinavia -- sorry -- mea culpa and all that.

You're probably right about defending ourselves now but we have for decades been the defacto police force for the free world.

As far as people being happy in those nations, it is because they like what they have now. However, we have been a nation for over 200 years and their socialist experience is very new...

Not only that but they are not capable of helping (in a significant way) nations in desperation. I can't remember the last time I turned on the news and heard the reporters say, "the eyes of the nation are on Finland to see what sort of aid they will be providing for the tsunami relief in..."

Our capitalist government has provided wealth and safety to nations around the world for decades. We are now BROKE and I mean BROKE. So I guess we will have to be HEAVILY taxed to fund more social programs.

I have an idea, why don't all the citizens of the United States who are in favor of socialism, sign over 75% of their income, savings, retirement and savings to fund the social programs and let those of us who are capitalist take care of ourselves.

Do you honestly believe that the greatest health care system on earth would be improved by socialism? Do you really think poverty would be ended in this country with socialism?

We have an endless array of social programs in effect now and we are throwing billions of dollars at them. Why hasn't it helped?

You are not factoring in the culture differences between the United States and any of the other SMALL nations you have cited for success. (A dose of reality would be for you to watch Jerry Springer)

    Australia pop. 20,400,000

I DIDN'T SAY IT WOULD WORK HERE. However, our health care system sucks... unless you have insurance or you're wealthy. But there are 47 million who have no health insurance and twice that many that have inadequate healthcare. Many others have a huge deductible...like $10,000 before insurance will pay a dime.

I think the healthcare in these countries is fine. I've had to be hospitalized and had to see a physician while in both Australia and Ireland. The service was great! And I went over the border to Canada to have lasix surgery for 1/4 of what it costs here.
