Do You Think Republicans Will Straighten Out the Federal Government?

This has felt like the longest political campaign ever, and it's only the midterms. Days after next week's elections, politicians and their cronies will gear up for 2012.

But now it's the Republicans turn. They will have the opportunity to slow the taxpayer-drain train. Some have noted that I'm not exactly the most enthusiastic conservative. They're right. Why? Because I've been here before. As in earlier this decade.

What did I get for my pains? A bloated federal government, growing deficits, unfunded health mandates (Medicare prescription drugs anyone?), politicians lining their pockets or bringing pork back home to their districts. So what will I get now?

Let's hope that the GOP will stop being the Party of No. There are times for Republicans to say no, mind you. When it comes to increasing federal government's role in our lives. When it comes to denying us rights based on some vague threat. Or when it comes to growing government bureaucracy and increasing taxes.

But now we need to be the Party of Yes and Do. The Tea Party and other Conservatives have, mostly, focused on the economy and the growth of government. And rightly, I believe. This is why they will have such a big role in the coming two years, and why Democrats are likely to lose the House.

Liberals could barely contain themselves when they took over. It was like an early Christmas party that taxpayers were paying for. The problem was that it seems like every day has been a Christmas party since. Which is why they will probably be swept out of power in one chamber next week, and if they're not careful, come 2012, they'll be kicked out of power altogether.

So where does that leave the GOP? It has to remember that less is more. Believe it or not, most people just want to be left alone. We'll pay for certain services, but we want to have enough to put food on the table. We want jobs that don't disappear overseas. We want our borders to be protected with a sensible plan. We want good schools. We want to be safe.

The last time Republicans were in power, they did do some good. But those were flush times. It was easier. It's tough making hard political choices when the economy is so bleak and voter anger has swept the nation. Let's hope they are prepared to be a counterweight to the government overreach promoted by President Barack Obama and Democratic leadership.

I'm watching and hoping.

Most of those who are newly elected from the GOP are not going to be the same old political elites. They are going to be aware of the "business as usual" pitfalls and stand their ground. They will be like a group of people who know they are public servants and NOT entitled political elites who can do as they please.

Unfortunately, there has been so much deception from the MSM that many Democrat voters believe all the trouble started with the last president. They don't remember or realize that Clinton's administration set up the circumstances for the failed mortgages held by Fannie and Freddie. They don't realize that Clinton was given a chance to deal with Osama before he left office and let him go. The facts are not what people on the left like to pretend. They think that if they repeat lies enough that it will change the facts. Well, facts are stubborn things and they have and do come to light, thankfully, like the hoax of CO2 as a pollutant! It's been proven a hoax, yet the MSM and left ignore the facts! The GOP is our best chance to put us on the right track for a stronger economy while preserving our constitution. That's what this election is about. The left wants to destroy our constitution and turn most Americans into government slaves. Time to put a stop to this treachery!

OK, I'm talking 2012 after the Teapublicans OWN the Bush recession and you are talking about Tuesday. They can't create jobs that aren't there and they know it. Have YOU heard of any of them saying what they would do to create jobs except tax cuts for the rich?
  • Herb CHUCK -... 2010/11/01 01:59:25
    Herb
250.000 to500.00 isnt rich thats small busines more jobs when you get tax breaks who does the most jobs small business
  • CHUCK -... Herb 2010/11/01 12:04:50
    CHUCK - Liberal in Seattle
They've had those breaks for 8 years! Show me the jobs! Why isn't unemployment coming down? That's an absolute fallacy. Having a tax break doesn't create jobs, demand for a product creates jobs and the middle class, what's left of it isn't buying because their jobs went over seas to make cheap crap so those with the tax breaks can make more money!
  • Herb CHUCK -... 2010/11/01 17:27:29
    Herb
thats true but what drove them there was unions and to strict envionmental laws. we can get this economy going and if tax breaks didnt do it why did it work with reagan after cater huh?
  • CHUCK -... Herb 2010/11/01 18:27:44
    CHUCK - Liberal in Seattle
It didn't, trickle down never worked except for the rich! Thats' been the republican mantra since Reagan, Bush tried it, see what we got. I don't see how you blame unions for demanding a good pay check! Environmental laws, just a cost of doing business. The Republican solution is outsource the jobs, save your bottom line, the hell with the American people, In fact they are willing to help them with more deregulation's and back to the Bush ways. You notice, one thing the Republicans refuse to talk about is creating jobs! They don't plan to!
  • Herb CHUCK -... 2010/11/02 01:47:43
    Herb
but chuck isnt that the thing the bottom line an union yes help but they have asked for way to much good paying jobs and benefits are one thing but what they ask for sometimes can bust the company. enevoinmental laws have gotton way out of hand yes some are cool but people like the serria club etc press for way to much and that cause prodcucts to go up and it gets charged back to the consumer you think the business actually pay for it? that's what business is all about the bottom line and making money not just breaking even isnt it nice to make a profit called capitalism.
  • CHUCK -... Herb 2010/11/04 01:28:18

You are obviously out of touch as to where we are and how we got here. I've lived through all the crap from Eisenhower to Obama, I've been through all of the bubbles. It worked all of those years without tax cuts for the rich. Reagan busted the unions and started the trickle down, there goes America!

I hope they have also learned regardless of the party , the American people won't just take anything and sit back..... we are smart, we can read, we know what our constitution means , we know when it is being destroyed ...

8 Lies Republicans Want Us To Believe
    http://bestoftheblogs.com/Hom...

    1) President Obama tripled the deficit.
Reality: Bush's last budget had a $1.416 trillion deficit. Obama's first budgetreduced that to $1.29 trillion.
    2) President Obama raised taxes, which hurt the economy.
Reality: Obama cut taxes. 40% of the "stimulus" was wasted on tax cuts which only create debt, which is why it was so much less effective than it could have been.
    3) President Obama bailed out the banks.
Reality: While many people conflate the "stimulus" with the bank bailouts, the bank bailouts were requested by President Bush and his Treasury Secretary, former Goldman Sachs CEO Henry Paulson. (Paulson also wanted the bailouts to be "non-reviewable by any court or any agency.") The bailouts passed and began before the 2008 election of President Obama.
    4) The stimulus didn't work.
Reality: The stimulus worked, but was not enough. In fact, according to the Congressional Budget Office, the stimulus raised employment by between 1.4 million and 3.3 million jobs.
    5) Businesses will hire if they get tax cuts.
Reality: A business hires the right number of employees to meet demand. Having extra cash does not cause a business to hire, but a business that has a demand for what it doe...

Reality: A business hires the right number of employees to meet demand. Having extra cash does not cause a business to hire, but a business that has a demand for what it does will find the money to hire. Businesses want customers, not tax cuts.
    6) Health care reform costs $1 trillion.
Reality: The health care reform reduces government deficits by $138 billion.
    7) Social Security is a Ponzi scheme, is "going broke," people live longer, fewer workers per retiree, etc.
Reality: Social Security has run a surplus since it began, has a trust fund in the trillions, is completely sound for at least 25 more years and cannot legally borrow so cannot contribute to the deficit (compare that to the military budget!) Life expectancy is only longer because fewer babies die; people who reach 65 live about the same number of years as they used to.
    8) Government spending takes money out of the economy.
Reality: Government is We, the People and the money it spends is on We, the People. Many people do not know that it is government that builds the roads, airports, ports, courts, schools and other things that are the soil in which business thrives. Many people think that all government spending is on "welfare" and "foreign aid" when that is only a small part of the government's budget.

Don't believe the lies being told by Republicans. They just want to return to power, and they'll say anything to do that. If the American people fall for this nonsense and return them to power, the recession will continue unabated and the country will be damaged for many more years. Remember when you go to the polls this November, it was the Republican policies that put the American economy in the mess it is in right now and those policies have not changed.
