Do you think religion is more helpful or harmful in today's society?

When my friends talk about singing in their church choirs or being a part of youth group, I think religion is positive. Bar mitzvahs and quinceñeras are a wonderful part of today's society.
But people are always fighting about religion. Which one is the best, which are real, how Christ is above all... Is that really what we want to be teaching our children? Was the Crusades really necessary?
America is the big melting pot, but it was originally founded so Christian Puritans could have their freedom of religion. And what about the atheists? Where do they fall in this equation? Why is being gay against religions? Isn't love, love?
My parents raised me so I wasn't a part of any one religion, specifically because they didn't want me to become biased. But I was still raised to believe in God. Isn't that the core of every religion? Why the fighting?

People of many faiths are the core of many groupes in oppositionto secular/politicle philosophies from here to Tabet. I think few religions lend themselves well to being dominated by States. That's been tried from days of old, and some still try now. Didn't work well in Europe when Church and State went hand in hand, nor the USSR or China which tried (try) to dominate religion. So I think much hatred of religion come from those who champion the State, and from those in opposition.
The Crusades were a long time ago, and I encourage you to look at the period before, in the East as well as the West, for those answeres. IMO it was a clash between an expansionist religion, and another seeking relief and wealth at home.
What did evil people do in ancient times that they still do now?
They sacrificed their own children to their God Satan. (now it's called abortion)
They died from AIDS. (".....and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet." Rom 1:27)
They murdered Christians. (Progressive Communism, Islamofascism and National Socialism are the most recent historical tyrants)
