There will always be poor. Not everyone can fit at the top. Life grades on the curve. There are those who work hard, break themselves down physically and mentally and barely scrape by. There are also those that disabled, dream of being able to work again and be functional citizens and not spend their days worrying about where the money for groceries is coming from.

Not really. The middle class have less write offs and more actual dollar tax liability then any of the rich people. Their initial rate may be th ehighest, but by the time they write off everything they can, they pay less taxes then we do. So it is NOT classist, in that the middle class is TIRED of supporting all of the dead wood at the top and bottom of the food chain.

I have to be honest I don't really understand the question but I think that they need to be shown respect.........my father and I passed by a homeless man on the street next to our car a few days ago and my father decides to give him two gift cards to Burger King...which would provide him with a few meals well anyways when we circled around and handed it to the man.......he was so appreciative and he said thank you god bless you both......it touched me and I know that if I were in the same situation as the homeless man that I would have someone that would do the same for me (as my father did)

For most the foot would be best, but there are some, maybe more now because of the economy, that need just a hand.

i see 'a helping hand' as guidance rather than dropping a million dollars on a poor man's lap. he needs to wake up and see the need to change for the better. i think with proper guidance, ppl can achieve so much together

Bad choices have bad consequences. Haven't yet met someone poor who didn't have a choice. People fall on hard times. Resourceful people bounce. I listened to a woman last week who had 6-9 months to live and one of her biggest concerns was being able to pay off all of her debts even though she was unable to work and on an assisted living stipend.

I think of her often when I see people who are perfectly able to work, but don't because the labor is "beneath them" or when they are complaining that their free ride doesn't come with a big-enough check.

So while there's one in a million who needs a helping hand, the rest should get a swift kick.

I'm sorry God has blessed you and you are not as thankful as you should be. Not everyone is gifted with the same resources as others.

Gifted? That's a riot. It's called hard work. And please, don't be sorry. Not everyone has sacrificed as much to succeed or worked as hard as I have, either. When my friends hung out having fun or playing games in high school, I worked a job. When my friends goofed off at the mall or had parties on weeknights, I studied. When my friends scored some pot and stared at the ceiling all weekend - I took a second job to pay for higher education. When my friends dropped some E, knocked some girl up, and got married... I used protection.

And now that they wake up one day and find they aren't "blessed", they want handouts? Give me a break. You act like I don't know these people. My family is full of these people. I hang out with these people. They brag to me how much they get paid for filing their taxes. "Don't see why everyone has such a problem with this. Hahahaha."

As I said, bad choices have bad consequences. While there's one in a million that need a helping hand, the rest should get a swift kick. It's good for them.

Homeless people who only beg for money and do nothing to help themselves deserve a foot. People who are poor even though they're working their asses off(like my family), deserve a hand. There was a point where we had trouble even buying FOOD when I was little, and my parents would starve just so my brother, sister and I could eat. It got the point where my mom only weighed a hundred pounds. But she would always just smile and say, "I not hungry sweetie, you go ahead and eat." Luckily, that stage didn't last very long, but it was still really hard on my parents.

your parents are like my parents. good peoples. with people like that you won't stay poor long. mainly because they fight to work and sacrifice for people other than themselves. You're parents are awesome.

Wel, can I hold their hand while kicking them in their behinds to get them motivated to get off the public dole?

I support the theory of a helping hand, but NOT a lifetime of sloth on the public dole.

Well, some areas of the country, specifically in the back of the mountains in West Virginia and Kentucky, there is no work, there is only welfare, so someone would have to create retail and industrial type places in order to have jobs FOR the people. Diane Sawyer has done several specials on that area, there just isn't any work, and very, very few ways out of there.

i do not believe in any form of welfare, I think churches and other agencies should do the charity stuff from pirivate donations only. BUT since we have them used to the government boob so to speak, we have to create a way to weant them off.

    How old are you?
60% of the population has been getting more poor for the last 35 years.

Because the upper class rigged it that way so they can make lot more
    money themselves.
They did it because they are genuinely ill in the head, sick with greed, are raised to be callous, and think of the working class as expendable servants not as the Anerican public.
They the rich are the Americans, were nothing.

The middle class is being strangled to death by the poor and the rich. Middle class folks have no power and no money, we work, we pay taxes, we buy little houses and hope we can save some for the future, DO NOT BLAME the welfare deadbeat crisis on the middle class greed, we don't have much to be greedy over, blame the fat rich pigs that run our government.

But in some cases where the benevulent system is abused , a foot would serve the purpose to get the lazy asses up and find a job.
