Do you think more federal funding should be alloted to help prevent and battle natural disasters?

One of the biggest drains we have in the US is flooding. And we lose billions when wide areas flood. Do we have policies in those areas to encourage builders to build houses on pier and beams raised up a few feet? Not that I can surmise. We stick to slabs because they're cheaper, but in flood prone areas the local authorities should get this working for all new building. Wouldn't that help to bring down the huge cost of govt. funded flood insurance?

I also think states should pay their executives less and stash more money away into their "rainy day" fund.

Obviously measures are taken in certain areas where they can be, fires are a big one that come to mind, and of course things can be improved on in certain areas. However if you're talking about the "big scheme of things" we're talking near unlimited spending.

Prevent and battle a natural disaster? For real?

They kinda do their own thing and there's not a whole lot one can do to change that.

The clean-up is one thing but we certainly don't need to involve the Federal govt. in anything beyond what it already screws up.

Problem is, they get the $$$$ then the states play hell getting it back and have to meet the Federal guidelines to get any relief.

Allow the states to keep the money in the first place and eliminate FEMA altogether.

we're broke...respond to the individual disaster as needed...besides, if we set aside funds before hand the politicians will only spend it somewhere else

That is not the role of the federal government.

The government already funds and is responsible for preventing natural disasters. Sometimes the government does not care and wants a disaster to happen because it is just that - natural.
