Lawmakers in at least 11 states are looking at plans to restrict the use of drones over their skies amid concerns the unmanned aerial vehicles could be exploited to spy on Americans. The American Civil Liberties Union says state legislators are proposing various restrictions on local authorities' use of the technology.

Concerns mounted after the Federal Aviation Administration began establishing safety standards for civilian drones, which are becoming increasingly affordable and small in size. Some police agencies have said the drones could be used for surveillance of suspects, search and rescue operations, and gathering details on damage caused by natural disasters.

Currently Drone flights cost several multiples of manned helicopter patrols .
Hourly rates copters are measured in hundreds of dollars per hour

You are trying to compare reaper military drones to small surveilance drones that only requires one man and a computer to opperate.

comparing to the cost associated with border patrols
"They cost a little more than $3,000 an hour to operate, according to government documents and testimony from CBP officials.
The border drones flew more than 5,700 hours in fiscal year 2012, according to CBP, for a total operating cost of at least $18 million last year. "

of course smaller machines are available down to RC airplanes .
When comparing comparable abilities to a Helicopter , the costs are multiples of the helicopter cost on an hourly basis .
"Police copters cost from $500,000 to $3million fully equipped. Flying costs range from $200 to $400 per hour. In Phoenix, the aviation budget for fiscal 2008 is $8.4million."

The border patrol drones are large drones that can fly thousands of miles and cary armament. They are being flown by the NG which is why they cost so much.

That is not the surveilance drones that police will use for for finding missing kids or doing search and rescue. Even a small drone can be equipped with cameras and heat sensors.

Surely the costs will decrease over time . The drones that were to be used in the Dorner manhunt were estimated to be in $3500 and hr range .
  • Sam ray 2013/02/15 01:20:53
They had the NG bring in drones so it probably was expensive but very few states would make that kind of investment and it is the much smaller and cheaper surveilance drones they want.

Search and rescue, smoke spotter, survey, mapping. No lethal uses within the US.

    I think it's a great idea.

There is no local law enforcement in this country today---all are either criminals and drug dealers----otherwise the rape and robbery of the taxpayers would not be as endless as today---

Too expensive... your LOCAL taxes will be used to buy, maintain, fuel and ARM these lethal eyes in the sky... BIG BROTHER will be watching you soon.
  • Sam Elaine ... 2013/02/14 23:34:24
Poor reasoning: they already do that for helicopters used for search and rescue which cost a whole hell of a lot more to maintain and for fuel.

Ugh, if "big brother" wanted to watch you or me, he wouldn't need drones to do it, facebook and threads like this give him plenty of information without the bother of sending a drone up into the air. for example, big brother would read your post and put you on the unreasonably paranoid person list or do you think your posts aren't saved somewhere?

It would actually cut taxes, compared to helicopters.
