Do you think just because George W. Bush has the title 'President' he deserves some respect?

I hear people knocking on the president all the time. But, I believe that because he was elected president and he has that title, he deserves some respect. Hate me for it, but I really think that he does. If you have an ignorant school teacher, don't you think you should respect that teacher even though you don't like him?

I respect George Bush for the man he is AND the president he was. I think the office of the presidency should be respected although many times the man holding office does not deserve respect. HInt: his name is Barack Hussein Obama. No respect for that man from me.

"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."
Teddy Roosevelt in the Kansas City Star, 149
    May 7, 1918
If his actions earn him respect, he deserves respect. If his actions earn him derision, he deserves derision. Merely having a job earns him nothing, he needs to do that job well to earn respect.

George W. Bush deserves respect beyond having had the title of President.

Obama on the other hand has made a mockery of the title and the position.

Just no. Its actually laughable....im actually confused at the point you are trying to get at...i surely did NOT elect him so why should i give him respect when i didnt even want him. A teacher is different, if you are not learning anything from a teacher then why should you just sit there and take a whole bunch of nothing? would you stay in a class that you are not learning anything from?

Actually, he's no longer the president and does not retain the title. We only have one at a time; thus, he is now 'former President Bush.'

    everyone deserves to be respected
the whole treat other as you'd like to be treated thing
everyone deserves to be talked to respectfully, but nevertheless i think that this man is just a tad ridiculous. He did too many ridiculous things for me to respect him as a person, but if i were to meet him and talk to him, i would still be respectful.

I find it disrespectful when journalists attempt to be smart asses when they address him as Mr. Bush, or they think they are familar enough to call him George....how presumptious is that?!! who the hell do these journalists think they are? If a person has served as president that is his offiial title til he dies...if people don't like it...then screw them....that's how it is....get over the hate!!!t

Actually, it's not. There is only one sitting President and all the others are former Presidents. Technically (this is the protocol of honorifics), they would revert to the last office held - Governor, Senator, Congressman/woman. Former Presidents are occasionally addressed as Mr. President, by interviewers or the public, but in fact they are no longer the President.

I'm talking particularily while the man was president being addressed or called Mr. President or George...usually they are pretty good at saying "former president" now that he is no longer in office...I didn't clarify that in my first statement...good catch...

Interviewers actually called the man by his first name? That's weird.

Re 'Mr. Bush' or 'Mr. Obama', many news organizations have the policy of using the honorific of President Bush or President Obama in introducing the subject (as in, "President Bush held a news conference...") and thereafter refer to him as Mr. Bush or Mr. Obama. It's not meant to be discourteous and in fact, it's not. I believe it stems from our good democratic tradition of recognizing presidents as our fellow citizens and equals under the law.

There is much more to a President then just bring men and women back from a war! Our country was under attack...Remember 911.... what was President Bush suppose to do? Sit back and do nothing? Granted President Bush was not the most greatest President we have ever had but he did much more then obama has ever done.

The office of President deserves some respect, but not the man. When he does something wrong, he should be held accountable like anyone else. He should show respect to the office and resign.
