Do you think it is just human nature to hate people who have more power than us?

    No.

Absolutely not. To question is logical, to "hate" someone simply because of a position they hold is...irrational at best.

Power amounts to the capacity to bend others to your will. Having the means to compel others to do what you want them to do. And is often used to make people do what they don't want to do. As with violence, there are degrees of power, in how it's exercised and abused. Nor does power's kinship with violence end there, since it amounts to inflicting one person's will upon another. To forcing others to do things whether they want to or not.

Lord Acton's statement still holds up pretty well:

Power corrupts. And absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Abuse is an ultimately unavoidable consequence of power...

No. Throughout history there have been beloved, powerful leaders. Think of Elizabeth I, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill. I *do* think it's human nature to hate people who wantonly abuse their power.

Anyone who has any form of power over us. Any form of authority makes us all a little uneasy. Not so sure about the hate. That seems a bit strong.

It is human nature to reject authority, but not necessarily power. If you look at any basic psychology textbook, you are bound to hear the same.

Obama represents a far more authoritative take governmental power, and I think that is the principle reason he garners so much resentment from individuals.

Human beings do not like to be ordered around and told how to live.

Might be human nature, but it isnt my nature. I dont hate people who have power. I dont like people who abuse the power they have, but I dont hate them. I may hate the stuff they do, but why waste time hating a person? Doesnt make much sense to me.

I don't think so. I have had great respect for people in powerful positions. The power isn't what makes them...It is the type of person that they are.

I must be because I've observed that no matter the amount of good a person in power would do it seems they are still regularly resented. I don't really understand the reasoning behind that manner of thought but it exists.

Of, course!!! that's the whole idea behind the founding of America. According to Milton Freidman, it is also human nature to slide towards more government power too if you look through history. funny how that plays out...

better times for who? why can people be given the tools and freedom to make their own lives better? no one can lead me to contentment - but they sure try to do alot to impede my liberty and restrict the ways in which i find contentment.
