Do you think Congress should take their scheduled vacation and let the Post Office default on their retirement payment?

The Post Office Crashes and burns tonight at midnight and defaults for the first time in history on a 5.5 billion dollar payment towards retiree health. What is congresses answer? They are going on vacation. Not for a few days mind you. The whole month of August. They wont be bothering with such petty matters again until September, leaving the USPS to twist in the breeze.

USPS

In a stunning example of why government run businesses don't work usually, as the USPS urges congress to pass SOME KIND OF LEGISLATION, practically begging for some type of mention or even concern from congress. In 2006, Congress was quick to pass legislation upping the USPS's responsibility financially for a health benefit fund, but when it comes to passing legislation to help stop the bleeding, there is sadly no one home.

The Current congress Has proven itself to be the most worthless collection of cretins America has ever assembled in on place.

Apologies to the minority which still believe in America and still hold honor as a value .

The attempt to put the Post Office out of business by burdoning them with impossible to acheive retirement payments to super fund the retirement fund. Congress needs to stay in session and resolve this

If they work out a jobs bill, they can go on vacation. I'm suppose to be their boss, why won't they do what I say?
The post office is very well run and if the congress would not impose impossible requirements on them concerning retirement funding there would not be a problem.

Congress leaves for home for a month but it's not a vacation as most of them are working their tails off to get re-elected again. They surely aren't basking in the sun somewhere taking a month off.

I think they should all stay home. They've been kicking this USPS can down the road for more than a year now. The USPS alleges that the retirement funds are over-funded and if you want to look into the truth of that and the whole story of who owes what between the USPS and the federal government, you're going to need a lot of time! I've researched it and it's a maze of crap!

I work for the USPS and here's hoping my paychecks don't bounce! This whole matter won't be solved until after the election. It's a political third rail like SS and Medicare. The Democrats are all in the pockets of the unions and there are a number of plans out there to save the postal service but no one wants to vote on any of them. They're all a bunch of cowards.

These are retirement benefits. People who worked darn hard for a long time to get vested in their retirement have already paid for those benefits. They can't AFFORD for Congress to take a vacation before this is settled.

It's me and I'm not sure why you'd deny me a retirement that I've worked for and paid in to? We haven't been receiving taxpayer money and if they do the right thing now we can survive without it. You remind me of my sister-in-law that said she didn't know what the big deal was with 9-11, she didn't know anyone. I have a family and I've worked hard, contrary to what some people believe about the postal service, you aren't rewarded for hard work, some do it because it's the right thing to do.

I'd be just fine with that if it wasn't automatically taken out of my check. Change the rules first, not after the fact. There is nothing unChristian about retirement. I'm with you on the minimum wage and all labor should be able to be negotiated by the person, not a union.

The tax payers shouldn't have to bale out the post office. I am sure private companies could do a better job at far less cost.

The Post Office is the ONLY government branch forced to make this stupid deposit, thanks to the Conservatives that passed that stupid "regulation" just before they lost the congress. They have NO intention of saving the USPS, NONE. Just another thing to hand over to the 1% so they can steal more of America's money.

And of course no private company is also required to make this deposit - the whole intent was t drive the USPS into the mess it's in as an example of 'government' not working....

  • Gracie ... BigFig#9 2012/08/02 00:44:34 (edited)

Because we're an entirely different species. We're part of the Federal government but we're an independent agency that isn't funded by tax dollars because in the past we've created our own revenue. The payments in question are to fund the retiree health benefits. There is a big problem between the old Post Office Department and the newer USPS and the funding of retirements. If they give the money back to the USPS it has to be replaced by the Federal government. It's not like there is billions and billions of dollars there.

In reality, mail volume is down and they need to go to a five day delivery to survive at all. Otherwise, the taxpayer will be funding it.

You have some really bad information, but it's not your fault...except that you believe people who are spreading the propaganda. You have to fund the retirement and the idea that they're funding future employees who aren't even born yet is absurd and blatantly false. Don't be duped.
  • ALofRI Gracie ... 2012/08/01 23:45:50

No. I don't allow "propaganda" to influence me from ANYWHERE! It's a matter of Congressional record.
  • Gracie ... ALofRI 2012/08/02 00:49:20

There are Congressional records that say many different things. It's the pre-funding of retiree health benefits that is in question. I've been trying to sort it out for a year so as soon as you've got it down, please be sure and share it with me.

Warning...don't think you're getting a true answer from the USPS themselves or the unions or any politicians being funded by the unions. The NALC is trying to say that Issa is in the pocket of UPS because they donated to his campaign but what they don't tell you is they did also and they're pissed because he's not doing what they want him to do.

Its congress under Bush that caused this problem. Another lingering (looming in the background), mess the GOP dropped on the citizens. It should be apparent who needs to go. This is yet another example of how far the broken GOP will go to destroy this nation.

Congress should be required to work more and vacation less and not call it meeting with their constituents because lets face it they don't go out and talk with the public and they have little in common with the people they serve.
