This same concept is seen in the differences between Dems and Repubs... Dems tend to shove regulations and taxes down our throat that we don't want because they say they know what's good for us... while Repubs tend to be more... well... American !
College campuses are so embedded in the Leftist establishment it's sick to say that there is any academic freedom any more... your average college campus will have tens of covers/ fronts for the Left usually using your dollars, they call them "Labor Center" or "Gay and Lesbian Studies Department" or “JFK School of Government” or "Public Policy Foundation," etc etc.
Can you think of one Right-leaning institution on a major university campus?? Hoover Institute at Stanford is the only one that comes to my mind... it's outnumbered 100,000 to one.

Yes, I am tired of these so-called "public servants" that serve themselves first and every special interest group like "la raza" which isn't even citizens of America second and careless what their constituents want, think, and say. I listen to talk radio a lot and it's kind of interesting. If you can sort of suspend yourself and just enter into the world of the people who are calling in, you can understand them. I've never seen a study, but my sense is that these are people who feel really upset.These people think, "I've done everything right all my life, I'm a god-fearing Christian, I've worked hard. I do everything I'm supposed to do. And I'm getting shafted." And in fact they are getting shafted. So somebody must be doing something to them, and they want to know who it is. Well its the liberal socialist agenda. Rush Limbaugh has also answered - it's the rich liberals who run the government, and of course run the media, and they don't care about you—they just want to give everything away to illegal immigrants and gays and communists and so on.
