Do you think a system like sodahead could change the world?

zeldamaster17 2012/07/01 21:08:51
You!

Yes, I do. I think we could use it to vote for our freaking president if we weren't a stupid republic where our vote doesn't count.

if only there were integrity for the election, but what matters is not whom you vote for, you have to find out who is counting the votes... Joseph Stalin" It matters not whom you vote for but who counts the vote"

    Not really

    It isn't much more than a time-waster.

So far it hasn't. And the American people are strongly reluctant to stand up to the government and make them accountable, so I hardly think Sodahead will accomplish that.

we are the product of our society not the producers of it when we debate on this site.

I would hope a site designed to produce far-right wing conspiracy theories and chain emails didn't have that ability.

I'm saying a system like it. Where all the people of the nation could come to vote on things

It would be interesting and potentially quite beneficial if it didn't have all the fear mongering.

You are obviously blind to the far-left wing conspiracy theories that are promoted on here.

XD no, I'm not man, I'm saying something like it. Much more moderated, and all politics.

Well, that specific response was to Cyan9 who was trying to make it sound like there are only right wing nuts on here, when there are clearly just as many left wing nuts. As for your original premise, I suppose it is possible, but it would be extremely difficult to enforce any kind of moderation fairly on an electronic forum. In my opinion, the debate and the town hall meetings are the best means at changing public opinion, which isn't saying much.

What upsets me is that in a republic what we really think doesn't matter

Those are far less numerous and far easier to ignore. Usually the entire front page is some form of Rave this if Barack Hussein Obama is a Marxist-Kenyan Atheist Muslim plotting to steal your guns and give them to the NWO!!!!

No, they aren't. I'm Libertarian, which means I appear to be right wing to a left winger and left wing to a right winger and I get called both about equally.

First of all, there are definitely the same kind of thing from the left wingers. Second, I'll have to go count how many left wing examples vs how many right wing examples to see if this is true, because I think you are just not seeing the left wingers for what they are. Beware of confirmation bias.
  • Cyan9 Greg 2012/07/02 16:11:38

Currently on the front page there are 17 examples of right wing or Republican propaganda, 2 examples of left-wing or Democratic and 1 non-partisan example. The unbaised one was about Iran from "Shepard Smith". I found a total of zero of the top 20 threads to be intellectually stimulating/informative at all. So no, I am not suffering from confirmation bias.
  • Greg Cyan9 2012/07/02 17:03:19
    Greg
You are suffering from confirmation bias a little, but you are right that there are more polls that seem to be right wing. If you get into the comments, it has been my experience that I get called both by each about the same amount of time. It is quite frustrating when I'm neither.

And, I'll admit with my tongue firmly in my cheek that I may suffer a bit from confirmation bias myself since left wing/right wing doesn't really matter. It's all the same to me. You both want to expand government and diminish liberty, but in different ways and to different ends. The end result is always more government, not less, but the real answer to our problems is always less government, not more.

I never said there aren't left wing quacks out there. I'm simply saying that there are a significant number more on this site. You're making a statement of false equivalence by pretending that there are an equal number of left wingers and right wingers on this site(and an even greater error when comparing the number of intensity of left-wing quackery to right-wing quackery). I consider myself somewhere in between a liberal(in the political theory sense not the American sense) and a left-libertarian. So I generally agree with those on the left more often than the right but I have been banned and verbally attacked by those on the left often enough(especially the authoritarian left).

It could change the world if it had a lot of users, with a focus.
Same as any Forum, social networking site, chat room or gathering of any kind.
