Thanks to another poster on SH I and many others have learned that an amendment that was added to the transportation bill will result in possible shutting down of about 1,000 roll your own businesses. Do you know anyone that will be effected?

I don't. However, having read that part of the bill it was plainly obvious that it's sole goal was to destroy that bit of entrepreneurship.

Now, why is it people vote? Oh yeah, "The next guys gonna be different, I swear it!"

Almost everyone I know that still smokes rolls their own. Some use a machine and tubes and filters....some just pull out a paper and wrap it all up. Out here it's what you do to same $$ on cigarettes. Our version of a 'rolling parlour' is the kitchen table.

For now the mini plastic machines are still safe; it's the commercial ones that are gone. However people who say "well I can still do..." bug me because with a mentality like that, there's no opposition to loss of freedom.

We never had the availability of a roll-your-own parlour. I'd never even heard of one before it was mentioned on the boards here. It's hard to get worked up over something like that, y'know? I save my exercise for problems that directly impact me. Otherwise you spread yourself too thin to have any real impact anywhere.

The problem is if everyone waited until the government took away what directly effected them, there'd really be nobody left to fend off the government's control.

Yes, but I don't see how fighting against a government powerful enough to destroy 1,000 small businesses isn't a battle worth picking.

Yet you allowed continued precedents which continue to break down our possible recourses. If you keep ignoring all the battles you will lose the war.

Not you specifically but people who do not take action against destruction of freedom caused by government simply because you have not been effected yet.

Grow and roll your own people for about 25 cents a pack, they can't outlaw you doing it all yourself...

Sure because most people have the room to grow and dry tobacco leaves and yes, they can most definitely outlaw that, if that's what it takes to keep the massive corporations in control over production.

I know many people doing it, there neighbors are trying to figure out exactly what kind of "bushes" those are that they plant around their houses every year...
  • kir S. Gompers 2012/07/15 17:55:50

And all the people who live in cities and towns with no place to grow plants? Please. If you smoke a small amount in a semi rural area you, then you can get by. Note also that it won't be long before even that will be outlawed with the way things are going.

As long as the federal government has as much power as it has gained over recent decades nothing is safe.

And I find that those who say "it doesn't matter that we can no longer do A because we can still do B" will quickly lead to a situation where nothing can be done at all.

No. You've been talking about C this whole time. A was being able to go to one of the 1,000 small roll your own shops that have the machines that are now being shut down across America. B is roll it yourself, which I think will be next, and C is growing it yourself which I'm sure they will go after at some point.

You are free to sit idly by and watch Rome burn if you like but you are very mistaken if you think that the destruction of the "idiot city dwellers" freedoms cannot and will not reach even people such as yourself eventually.

"Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union, set in motion events designed to cause a famine in the Ukraine to destroy the people there seeking independence from his rule. As a result, an estimated 7,000,000 persons perished in this farming area, known as the breadbasket of Europe, with the people deprived of the food they had grown with their own hands."

You may be in for a shock one day. Now that the tobacco industry has taken care of the opposition from commercial roll your own stores, they can move on to the roll your own paper and those little roll your own machines.

Kind of hard to roll your own without tubes and a roller. Of course you'll say that you can just use something else and ignore the fight.

Then when that fight is over, they'll go after you growing tobacco.

They love seeing all the American fear being broadcasted all over the internet, it empowers them.

About fifty years ago I knew a couple of "good old boys" who rolled their own while fishing.
I"m sure they have been dead for decades. So, I say, let it go. You can still buy a bag of Burley and some papers if that is your gig. But why? Anyone doubt that smoking causes lung disease and 400,000 deaths each year in the U.S.?

Stores locally sell loose tobacco. One thing you can do is grow your own tobacco and cure it for personal use. You can then raise it without pesticides and bloom retardants like Royal MH30 that is also used on potatoes to stop spuds from budding. Another reason to raise your own potatoes and veggies is to know what is on and in them.

A few someones in fact. It's just another bit of protectionism for the largest manufacturers of tobacco products under the logic of, "well, if they're rolling their own how can we be sure the products are safe for consumption".

I know a lot of roll your own smokers. I bet the black market keeps them in smoke when the tax is implemented.
