If they're going to jail for some ridiculous, victimless crime (like possession) yes. Not if they're guilty of an actual crime with an actual victim.

I have seen some "contempt of cop" cases where a verbal, non-violent discussion with a police officer, led a person to be arrested on trumped up charges like "obstruction".

Our jails are full of offenders of victimless crimes (like possession of drugs). Not only do I feel sorry for them, but I feel sorry for the wasted tax money in locking them up.

When it comes to violent crimes, or theft and burglary, I think those people did themselves in and deserve to pay their time. I also think that pedophiles and violent offenders against children should always be left in the general popluation.

Of course, a lot of our 'prisons' are too nice for the inmates. I don't think a lack of internet privileges, college degrees, cable television, or gym equipment would warrant cruel or unusual punishment. There's plenty of people on the outside that go without these things.

    Just my opinion though.

On the whole I don't feel bad for people who go to jail. But on a case-by-case basis, I'd feel bad for people, like those who were incarcerated for crimes they didn't commit.

If someone is awaiting trial and then is found not guilty or if it seems that the person was wrongfully convicted for a crime he/she did not commit then yes. If someone is in jail because he/she actually did brake the law then usually the answer will be no unless going by the law would cause others to be harmed. For instance if there was a law that required people to punch any person in a blue shirt in the face and someone was in jail for breaking that law I would feel sorry for that person as he/she would be in jail for not harming others. If someone was in jail for drinking and drinking was illegal I would not feel sorry for that person as that person would have broken a law that did not require that person to harm others. I also would certainly not feel sorry for someone if he/she was in jail for doing something caused harm to others even if doing it was not illegal.

I feel sorry for those who are robbed of their freedom and placed in a cage because of a "victimless crime", for example those who choose to harm themselves by using drugs while not harming anyone else or causing damage to another person's property.

My father worked for the federal prison system for a long time. He always had one issue that made him seethe with anger. That prisoners, as a result of the ACLU and Congress, had three-square meals a day, air conditioned facilities, medical treatment and legal protection while over 40 million people in the country lived in Poverty.

Prison should be so bad that you never want to be there again. After the second offense, my prison would be as follows:

    Work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week

    2 (basic) meals a day

    2 showers a week

    Entertainment/ a book and a candle

In my prison the only pleasures would be thinking of the day your sentence was up!
