When poverty strikes, needs are the things you are left with when you've given all the wants up. Wants are like hope, you never seem to run out of them.

    Work
    House
    Car
    Food
    Working utilities
Cell phone (cheaper than a landline, and you need a phone to find a job).
Internet - An indispensable tool in a job search.

You don't need a phone, internet or a computer, because if your friends or family don't have one, your local public library will have one. And if you don't have a job, you can visit those places regularly. And you don't HAVE to have a car. In cities there is public transit; in rural areas, you can almost always find someone that won't mind helping you go to the places you need to go.

In our consumer-driven economy, we're constantly being bombarded, via the mass media, with all sorts of new "needs", like HDTV’s, and blu-ray DVD’s, smart phones, IPods, etc. Depending upon one's economic situation, many of these expectations are bound to go unfulfilled.

The irony is that once these so-called "needs" are satisfied, our brains get a temporary boost in dopamine levels, followed by the inevitable let-down.

As we take more and more things for granted, our "wants" evolve into "needs", leaving us marooned in an endless cycle of acquisition and disappointment, which may be why wealth often goes hand in hand with increased rates of depression.

You hear it all the time... I need a house (I can't afford), I need a new car (I can't afford)... so many seem to covet the things they see that others have, but instead of working hard and first focusing on their REAL needs, they think that their WANTS is what will make them truly happy. The Government seems overly zealous in helping shape this in peoples minds, giving into the "wants" of the people and not the actual "needs" of the people. Instead of focusing on how to lower the standards for mortgages, it should have been the economy, instead of focusing on ObamaCare (forced healthcare, not reform) it should have been on the economy... create jobs, create success. This will allow more to meet their basic needs and maybe even put some of their wants within reach.

Wants should be earned, not given!

Easy credit removes critical thinking and judgement from the buy or not decision. Habits reinforce buying your wants, and rationalizing them as needs.
