If you are refering to a National need then the answer is yes. If you are fortunate enough to have made a fortune in a Nation that has needs, you can either reward that nation for providing you the platform to acquire your wealth or you can find another venue to play in.

You can call it whatever you want, but taking something that does not belong to you and that you didn't earn is stealing. And the last time I looked, stealing was still a crime.

I have been sickened by the theft of the middle class wealth in this country. We need to get a slue of lobbyist like the corporations and the wealthy have, and kick out congress people who are bribed by this class of the wealthy. It is disgusting how we have lost wages and benefits, and the middle class has declined into the poverty class!!!

The welfare state is so huge it is breaking under its own weight. It used to be that it only helped only those who are truly needy and people were taught that going on welfare was something to be ashamed of and people did whatever they could to stay off it. Now, it pays to earn less and go on public assistance because as you earn more, the more taxes they take from you and you become less and less eligible for help if things do go bad. Redistribution is theft from the makers to the takers.

Generally speaking......it is WRONG! It really depends on how the wealth was acquired.

Government is the only "legal" theft. We cannot continue to allow it to steal our lives for others. Happiness and prosperity depend upon our right and ability to carry our own burdens, and allow all others to carry themselves.

What makes forcing people to pay for "police, roads and defense" morally different from making them pay for social programs? Aren't all taxes redistribution of wealth? Unless you oppose taxes period (which I don't) then that stance seems totally arbitrary.

Is it fair that a man that makes 500k pay more than a man that makes 50k? Are you saying the man who makes 50k his labor and mind should allow him to be taxed less than that of a man who makes 500k?

Everyone in society with *any* money pays some sort of tax. Maybe not income tax and maybe not enough to offset the amount in benefits they get necessarily. But they still pay something whether it's sales, payroll, gas, etc. And no, I don't have a problem with a person making 500k paying more necessarily.

Or at least, I wouldn't if the money went to functioning social services, education and infrastructure. Of course we both know the US government blows an enormous amount of tax payer money on all sorts of unnecessary wars, subsidies and other schemes to enrich themselves and their contributors. Not to mention all the tax cheats in their ranks.

Cheap answer the person making 500k pays more we have a progressive tax system you along with many many others believe it is ok to steal as long as the government does it.

1) What makes it 'stealing' but a flat tax not stealing? Whether or not you view progressive taxes as a good idea or not that seems arbitrary.
2) If you imposed a flat tax, wouldn't that just lead to a regressive tax system essentially? Besides the fact that sales tax tends to hit the poor more you'd also be raising income taxes on them. Granted you could try to alleviate that with deductions but then its debatable if that's a true flat tax in that case.

Well in theory at least the state is a necessary evil to ward off what you're talking about (typical minarchist type argument). Of course the competence or honesty of a lot of governments makes that justification dubious.

The theory is not sound. The state kills more people than individuals, robs more people than individuals and impinges the freedoms of peaceful people.
