My opinion on this has nothing to do with my political beliefs--to me, this is a civil rights issue.
but I understand it's becoming a fad to not think so.
There was a societal good fulfilled by recognizing marriage between man and woman. What is the good provided by gay marriage to society?
Civil unions, contractual rights fine, marriage no.
We already have a system that is disfunctional and unfair, a couple without children subsidizes those who do have kids. The more kids you have the less you pay even though you are the ones driving up demands for government services. In Alaska a state worker retires with state paid health insurance, OK. They die the spouse continues coverage, fine. If the spouse goes to work they can opt out of the employers insurance and pocket the money their coworkers are paying as their share. If they remarry their new spouse is covered under the original workers state insurance. Now both can opt out of the employer offered insurance and pocket the the money. The partners get a lot of benefits without the society getting anything of value in return. Traditional marriage gave society the benefit of the child bearer being freed to raise the children and have some measure of security. The breakdown of traditional marriage has taken much of the societal benefit away. If you want to remove some of the benefits from traditional couples, no problem there.
