    It isn't justifiable, but it sure seems to work in politics. I don't think the negative campaigning is going to end any time soon.

    When you play politics by other means winning is the only goal but what ever means necessary. When war is played by rules you get eleven years in Afghanistan where we will end up leaving with nothing gained.

    all is fair in war, politics, or life in general the ends always justify the means. I would dare anyone to point to a situation where that doesn't apply.

    Lying, cheating, stealing, false accusations, shoving innocents out the way to get what you want...

    NOPE. The "winners" are never that: they are just bullies.

    And bullies eventually get put in their place.

    We have moral and legal codes for a reason. Breaking legal codes (say speeding on the way to the hospital when your child is badly hurt) is one thing. Breaking moral codes is another level entirely. There better be a *lot* at stake. Lives. Many of them.

    My brother in law is a "win at all costs" person. We had some friendly competitive games at our last family reunion and he ruined the fun for everyone with that attitude.

    I'll certainly agree there, but there's more then just sports.

    In combat, "winning at all costs" might just mean the difference between survival and annihilation, depending upon the situation. There have been plenty of instances where "At all costs" was justified in combat. The story of Blackhawk Down, for instance, and the survival of the Delta team and the US Ranger unit that was stranded on the ground. They killed hundreds of civilians who where quite ready to murder them and survived a nightmare of a night holed up in shot up buildings just to RUN back to the safety of the UN held stadium.

    That is the only time I believe in winning at all cost is combat or a struggle were you or someone elses life is hanging in the balance!

    That depends. In a "last stand" situation, that is certainly a viable option. When survival itself isn't on the line, then I'd say no, it's not justifiable.
