Do you believe in luck? If so, is it pure fate, or do you make your own luck?

Sometimes luck doesn’t just happen to you. Sometimes you have to go out and find it. Take Thomas Schultz, who with his business partner Lawrence Joseph bought a tiny cottage in Bellport, N.Y., in 2006. Intending to flip it, Schultz then learned that the art the previous owners left behind was worth $30 million.

“I believe that one can create their own luck,” Schultz told ABC News’ Amy Robach.

The artist was Arthur Pinajian, who worked in comic books and lived with his sister in the cottage, where he spent decades creating abstract expressionist art, and died in obscurity. Pinajian’s family wanted Schultz to trash the art. Schultz, who’d studied art history in college, couldn’t do it. He liked the work on a visual and human level, not for its resale value.

“I just knew it was someone’s life’s work,” he told Robach. “How could you throw someone’s life’s work into a Dumpster?” For three years, Schultz worked with art experts to clean and catalogue the 7,000 pieces of art. Experts decreed that Pinajian was an undiscovered genius of modern art. A professional appraisal by Peter Hastings Falk put the collection’s worth — the conservative estimate — at $30 million.

There is no such thing as "luck". Many coincidences, but no "luck".

I happen to be a very lucky man. On a personal level I'm happy and prosperous enough.

I suspect many people quietly do favors to ease the way, some obvious, most behind scene, and just don't say anything.

I think the way you think and see things in a certain way determine your luck; however life can't be controlled sometimes.

My dad always told me that luck is a combination of preparation and opportunity.
  • Blueskies medinaa14_ 2013/08/09 13:26:03
That's a part of it- if you are lucky enough to be prepared properly for the unexpected opportunity.
If you know the opportunity exists and prepare for it, that's a little different.

We can help to make our good luck, doing the right things: like studying and living a productive and decent life, but the luck factor is always there, like being in the right place at the right time when a good job opportunity appears, winning the lotto :o), finding a really good spouse, etc., since the moment we born there is luck involved as we cannot choose our family, socio-economic status, ethnicity, nacionality, physical appearence and health, when we just come to this world. There is saying that reads: " a man can be full of wisdom but if he has not luck, he is nothing...", many times this is true.

People can control their own fate to a point. In my own personal experiences fate changed many courses during my life. The word LUCK is just that; good or bad luck. When buying Lotto tickets you gamble with no guarantee. Of course, smarter one is, has good foresight; sees an opportunity, grabs it, can make a fortune. This same person can be struck dead by lightening same day. I'm not religious, but do have an inner feeling about some destiny in our lives. Many don't believe in Astrology. I do after studying, and doing a few charts. Is that saying: "it's In The Stars" true?

I wish I could. I think it takes a lot of inherent talent, great genes, or nearly superhuman drive to make your own luck. Success is half chance. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves and taking too much credit.
  • freda.collins.5 2013/08/08 03:36:51
I think there are too many variables that exist. I do believe you can choose which way your luck to turn. If you are wise enough to see things I think you have the ability to make choices to change what could become a bad situation.

If we could make our own luck, we'd all be pretty lucky all the time. And if I'm making my own luck, than I suck at it.
  • Sarah 2013/08/08 02:38:09
    Yes, you make your own.
Luck is more psychological than chance. If you believe you have luck on your side, your chances of accomplishment may be higher than without it.

    Yes, you make your own.
I don't believe in luck, I make my own life.

Schultz didn't create luck. He was a good man who did a beautiful thing and he was blessed for it. Pinajian's family however, was cruel and shortsighted regarding Pinajian's artistic talent right to the end, and so they ended up losing 30 million. Everyone here got exactly what they deserved merely by living life as they chose to do so.

You can be a good person doing beautiful things, or you can be a jerk and do nothing but create dischord and unhappiness. Ye shall sow what ye shall reap.
  • VonDruid 2013/08/07 22:40:19
    Yes, but it’s random.
For most people chasing luck will amount to nothing. It either finds you or it doesn't. You can work for things, but that isn't luck. This guy just thought that someones life work should be recognized for what it was and it turned out that others agreed with him.
