At most, he'd be able to drop it 18.4 cents per gallon, the federal tax on gasoline and I'm not even sure if he could do that without congressional approval.

He could do much , much more WITHOUT congress ................. if he wanted to . Look at what Bush did when the speculators drove up the price of oil . Just His Word that he was going to open up the Stratigic Oil Reserves and put drilling permits on the fast track ( while opening up MORE federal lands & water for drilling ) . NOTE * the Price Of Oil Took a Dive ! ( a BIG dive ) . Bush gave us $1.85 GAS !

NO!! Despite the convenience of using a president as a scapegoat during times of higher gas prices, no president controls the price of gasoline. Now if we can put the reins on those damn greedy ass speculators, whose sole motivation is profit, then gas prices wouldn't be as high!

The difference the president is trying to make right now is to quell the ever dangerous rhetoric coming from the GOP side of the coin. You start throwing around war rhetoric and, BOOM, gas prices go up. Also, with a new record for profits of over 137 BILLION dollars in 2011 alone, a threat to seriously end the tax breaks that those greedy bastards representing big oil get away with would certainly lower prices also!

His energy secretary said that the administration is not concerned with how high the price of gas goes. But now Obama may decide to care because of the affect high gas prices are having in his polling numbers. It appears that Obama's idea of leadership is to do whatever works out best for him.
