Do Unions Suck, or Are They Needed?

Javimendo 2012/05/02 20:19:01
"Labor unions, like the United Nations, are all too often judged by what they are envisioned as being — not by what they actually are or what they actually do...

That mask has been coming off, more and more, especially during the Obama administration, and what is revealed underneath is very ugly, very cynical, and very dangerous...

...The first thing it is concerned with is getting a captive group of union members, whose compulsory dues provide a large sum of money to be spent at the discretion of union bosses. This provides those bosses with both personal perks and political power to wield, on the basis of their ability to pick and choose where to make campaign contributions from the union members’ dues."

Unions suck, especially the public sectors unions. As a member of the SEIU they didn't do anything for me except take my money. If you lose your job there is no unemployment.
  • DJPanicDC 2012/05/04 09:54:56
Unions are the last line of defense between the workers and the boss, without them we would be working in sweatshops
  • Carl 2012/05/03 18:08:27
At one time they were needed. However, they've lost their way and now are involved with low life individuals with no ethical traits.

The true necessity of Unions still exists. However, Unions in their current condition and function no longer serve the purpose for which they were started.

Well, they way I look at it, with the way Romeny 'Likes to fire people" I would say they DON'T suck.

I don't know WHY people want this country to end up like China....

Union wages keep private sector pay in line.
  • les_gvt Bringba... 2012/05/05 06:23:36
in all honesty, supply and demand does a much better job at that. Remove the illegal aliens, reduce the supply of workers, and you will see wages go up
  • Bringba... les_gvt 2012/05/05 14:58:43
Like the corporations care about workers.. Ha. If they cared they would not have moved their work overseas to get cheap labor. I don't buy that.
  • les_gvt Bringba... 2012/05/05 15:23:44
it is not near as much about the labor as it is the EPA and taxes
  • Bringba... les_gvt 2012/05/05 16:03:43
EPA? I don't know about you but I enjoy breathing in clean air, and I would think a moral corporation would want to do its part in protecting the clean air act.
  • les_gvt Bringba... 2012/05/05 16:16:23 (edited)
Rules in moderation are one thing, however when you attempt to limit the amount of dust a tractor can create while plowing a field, you have gone overboard. Most companies have no problems with some rules and laws, since they too breath the air as the workers, however our EPA has gone beyond that.

Have you kept up with the Sackett v EPA case in Idaho- the Supreme Court ruled against the EPA, and their response was to continue and fine the Sackett's.

Under the Clean Water Act, every mud puddle in your yard is now under EPA control, because that water may find it's way to a river. Are you going to defend the EPA if they show up and tell you how to redo your yard and possibly require you to tear down your home to make sure that mud puddle does not run into the street, then into a drainage ditch on it's way to the river?
  • Bringba... les_gvt 2012/05/05 16:28:59
I live in Albuquerque and I wish I had a puddle in my back yard. I am sure it would evaporate before the EPA came into my back yard. Seriously, I do understand your point. Maybe the EPA should spend more time investigating Monsanto and Round-Up, it's the herbicides and pesticides that are damaging the reproductive systems of frogs and fish and turning the fish into a unisex type. Can you imagine what this is doing to our bodies?
  • les_gvt Bringba... 2012/05/05 16:54:52
West Tx is not much better, but do take time to look at the correlation to the regs they put out and the business leaving the US, it is very interesting.

Another thing is the Fracking issue this has been being done with no issues for 60 years, and now suddenly it is a problem. Or the pipeline from Canada- the EPA has turned down 2 alternate routes- but yet BNSF will make tons hauling that oil by rail- Guess who owns BNSF- Warren Buffet- do think the real issue may be $$$$ for Obama supporters?

All the things that Unions did for the worker are now state and federal law..

So just what are they doing now ?

I belong to one and believe me they are needed. Without my union I would be earning 40% less in wages,no overtime pay,no medical, and no retirement savings plan. It is important to have these things to live a decent life style.

In that case you could also choose to work elsewhere- if a company loses their workers, they will do whatever it takes to stay open

Unions have over stayed their welcome. They are not for the working person any longer, they are for the lazy losers, they're nothing but a bunch of thugs, they are all a part of the welfare/entitlement mentality. They want the money and benefits but they don't want to work for any of it.
  • bill 2012/05/02 21:04:48
A good example of a dangerous union is the SEIU, they walk in lockstep with the Communist Party USA.

  • johnc 2012/05/02 20:43:21
Unions had a time and place, and perhaps in some industry still do.
Now we have minimum wage laws
Now we have workplace safety laws
    Now we child labor laws
Now we have FLSA the fair labor standards act
Government unions and those they negociate with benefit the same. so that make no sense. no incentive to limit benefits, benefits they kick down the road for future for someone else to deal with. And they are not concerned with profit, nor customer satifaction nor efficientcys. in fact the goal of government is to grow. and thier answer is to print more money or raise taxes.

    It is really stupid.

    NOBAMA 2012
  • Bringba... johnc 2012/05/05 15:05:26
Yes, minimum wage laws that the Republicans want to take away. Child labor laws that good ole Newt would love to get his hands on. I love my union. If you do not like unions, do not apply for a union job.
  • johnc Bringba... 2012/05/05 16:08:27
republicans want to eleminate the minimum wage? Newt want child labor? U R spending way to much time reading WH talking points.

NOBAMA 2012, end the government/union complex
  • Roger47 2012/05/02 20:39:14
When labor unions were stronger, we had a growing middle class. Now that there are so few union workers, wages for all but the very top are going down.
