Americans say Bush still more to blame than Obama for economy

More than two-thirds of Americans — including half of Republicans — still blame former president George W. Bush for the country's economic ills, according to a new Gallup poll released on Thursday, hours before President Barack Obama was to deliver a high-stakes speech defending his handling of the weak economy.

[Related: Swing voters down on Obama's economic policy]

What one might call the blame gap has narrowed considerably: When Gallup first asked Americans in July 2009 whom they blamed for the poor economy, 80 percent laid a great deal or a moderate amount of blame on Bush, and only 32 percent blamed Obama. The current numbers show 68 percent of the public blames the former president while 52 percent say Obama deserves the blame. (The numbers total more than 100% because the question was not "which one do you blame more," but how much blame each president deserves individually).

The Democratic president has criss-crossed the country in recent months pleading for patience from voters still struggling in the anemic recovery and grappling with stubbornly high unemployment above eight percent. In his speeches, Obama makes a point of blaming Bush and Republicans in general for the 2007-2008 meltdown and warns Mitt Romney's economic program resembles the Bush approach "on steroids."

Among independents, who often play a role in deciding elections, 51 percent assign Obama a great deal or a moderate amount of blame, while 47 percent say he deserves not much or no blame at all. Meanwhile, 67 percent of independents say Bush bears a great deal or a moderate amount of the fault. Only 32 percent exonerate him in whole or in part.

So here's my question - Are Bush or Obama to 'blame'? The issues that lead to the 2008 collapse were the result of many years of bipartisan support for a policy of reduced financial segment regulation and turbo charging the construction industry with low threshold mortgage rules and deficit financed hyper priming of the economy with tax cuts and war time spending. I guess BUSH was a small part of that but the executive is only a part of the real political equation in this country anyway. Obama (nor Romney) were not in any leadership positions to be held to blame for the collapse but saying BUSH was responsible for the collapse is also off target. REGARDLESS, the question now is what policies best to regain our footing? Ryanesque austerity budgets of the UK, Ireland and Greece don't seem to be making the grade. Republicans are arguing that further tax breaks for the wealthy, constriction of the public sector and de-regulation of the financial sector will all yield better results than the current path, which while reversing decline, has only yielded very modest growth and very stubborn job growth. This is the real argument that needs to happen instead of three dozen other unimportant issues. I believe the current path is better than what the Republicans propose based on my u...

I believe the current path is better than what the Republicans propose based on my understanding of Macro-economics, what has happened in other economies and because I do not see where the new proposed Republican model differs that much from the bi-partisan policies that got us in to the mess. At the same time I'm more than interested in hearing well reasoned fact based articulate reasoning on why I could be wrong.

Of course most dems believe it. You know, if you tell a lie, make it big and keep telling it and it will be believed. What the dems fail to recall is that the dems had control of the House and Senate the last two years of the Bush administration. They could have done legislation that, were they intelligent enough to think it through, to help ease and maybe even stop the housing bust and its ensuing consequences throughout the banking system. Apparently getting re-elected is the only things on their minds once they are elected.

The only people polled were Obama's campaign staff and his family.

If people really believed that, they wouldn't be polling that Obama has been the economic failure that they are polling.

It sounds like pure fantasy and an attempt to make Democrats believe 0bama
has a chance to be reelected; so they will go to the polls to vote.................

Malaise is the enemy of this POTUS.

What is not noted is that the man with a supposed plan, Obama, is forever using Bush as his c.y.a plan. This leads me to believe that is his plan. Until Balmy realizes that you have to rely on the small businesses to generate the tax revenue, he will never get it straight.

Reportedly the Great Depression was over the day Roosevelt died. History has shown that you cannot tax your way out of a depression. Since I doubt that Balmy has much of a grip on history, he might try using what HST had on his oval office desk, "The buck stops here."

Blame Congress. If they would work for the people, as they were elected to do, instead of the corporations as they have been paid off to do, then we would make progress. The POTUS, does not vote on the bills, he either vetoes or signs. That is it. Congress makes the laws and these bafoons are the most worthless morons in US history.

Think about your question for just a minute. What you are asking the following: Do I believe that people who voted for B.O. in 2008 are STUPID enough to believe this story? Hell I think they are stupid enough to believe just about anything.I think that would be a definite YES !

Congress is to blame but most are too uninformed and can't get past the canned sound bite that it's Bush's fault.....

Those in power must really get off at the raw and flowing ignorance of the people of this country.

Americans say Bush still more to blame than Obama for economy!

Should read Democrats say Bush still more to blame than Obama for economy, and we know they lie through their teeth. We don't care what they say anyway; the truth is out there, we have seen and heard the crap that has come out of the mouth of Democrats.

The Romney/Obama polls should be a landslide for Romney.
