GE has announced plans to spend $600 million on a new solar factory
located in the Denver suburb of Aurora, Colorado. The factory, which
begins operations in 2012, will be capable of producing enough solar
panels per year to generate 400 megawatts of power, or enough energy to
power 80,000 homes. When completed, the factory will be bigger than 11
football fields – soon to be the largest factory of its kind in the U.S.

The business will also bring 355 jobs to Colorado plus 100 more positions at GE’s research facility in upstate New York.

The company is retrofitting and expanding an existing 200,000 sq.
foot former L’Oreal Worldwide warehouse, a project which will require a
$300 million investment. Over the next two years, GE will double the
building’s size.

Colorado is already the manufacturing site for GE Energy’s thin film solar pilot line,
a joint technology development between GE’s Global Research Center and
PrimeStar Solar, a company GE acquired in April. The new factory is
located near this smaller, 30 MW facility and a GE solar research
center. GE says the location will enable an accelerated start-up
schedule with production equipment installation beginning in January
2012.

The new factory will produce thin film solar panels made from cadium
telluride, which are cheaper than traditional crystalline silicon
panels. It’s the same technology as produced by First Solar, the largest
solar company in the world by market cap.

The panels are lighter, which helps ease installation. They’re also
large, which helps to lower the total system cost by reducing the amount
of racking and electrical components required. Shipments to
utilities and commercial customers will start in early 2013, according
to the annoucement.

GE’s plan for solar is similar to the one for its wind business,
a space the company entered in 2002 – that is, it plans to grow through
both technology and scale. GE now has more than 27 gigawatts of wind
and solar resources installed around the world.

GE believes in Solar Energy enough to invest in expanding their Factory. Soon

the Denver International Airport will be completely Solar. There are Solar cars

being made. Schools. Homes, Businesses, & Channel 7 (CBS) are already

in Colorado. There are a lot of these Solar Energy places in other states too.

Solar Energy and Wind Energy are already in use and they will become

the Energy Sources in the near future.

I don't see how it could "never work" >.> it does produce energy and plenty of people have solar panels.

I believe that solar and wind will work. We just haven't perfected it yet. We're getting a solar energy set up in our town. Don't know what the impact will be but it's worth a try.

I don't believe it should be either/or between using alternative energy and conventional energy that kind of thinking got it where we are today dependent on certain select sources and under developing others. We should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, it's foreign dependency we should be concerned about regardless of the source.

The technology is immature and inefficient. The collectors are expensive and they have a limited lifespan. The big drawback to solar power is storage. Obviously, there is no energy at night and limited energy on cloudy/rainy days. As Prius owners have discovered, the batteries have a short lifespan and they are expensive to replace. The government will be the main buyer for those GE panels because only the government can afford to throw away that much money. For the rest of us, we need more drilling.

My Prius is 6 years old and it is still going strong. And the government is still subsidizing oil, why not solar. Solar research is finding new ways of storage and usage all the time.

You've got about two years left if you are lucky. You will find that it has no value because the batteries are shot. Solar is cute; oil is powerful. How does food get to your town? Have you seen any solar 18-wheelers lately?

No good answer was provided here. Solar energy already has MANY effective uses, especially in providing electricity in remote places where it's impractical to run power lines. I've seen effective uses in remote villages of 3rd world countries, where they are able to have light to read by. We've all seen solar panels used in rural areas to light road construction, etc.

What I don't agree with is using massive tax dollars to promote something that will find its own way to be profitable WITHOUT massive tax dollars!

Solar and wind have niche markets in which each can be successful. But, they are not successful as additions to the main electric grid, except insofar as they are subsidized or mandated by law so users are forced to pay very high rates for electricity from them. The general energy cost of each is much too high and both are much too unreliable for general use.

Renewable energy sources are definitely the route to go. However, currently there is NO renewable energy source that can completely replace oil and gas, period. Just because of the fact that oil & gas are going to be around for a long time doesn't mean that renewable energy R&D; can't happen in tandem. Everyone wants cleaner energy sources, but you can't rush it or force it or have government involved in capital investments for it (i.e. Solyndra, First Solar). Just let it take its course.

    Dear Federal Government, SIT DOWN!

I just finished "Hot, Flat and Crowded" by Thomas Friedman. I am now convinced that climate change is a very real threat and that the U. S. has a real opportunity to become a major player in THE big growth industry of the first half of this century.

I would highly recommend the book to anyone wanting to become more informed on the issue and who has an open mind.

I am NOT yet a fan of a carbon tax or Cap-and-Trade, but I am willing to be convinced.

As long as GE does this without an Obama stimulus, fine. But if they are doing this just to get government money, which I suspect is the case, then their claims are just that, claims. Solar works when the sun is out. Without sufficient storage and battery capability there will always have to be a back up. Unfortunately, the three most viable backups such as oil, nuclear and coal are vilified by the same people that would laud solar. And while people love to hit on oil, it is the safest and most economical fuel source right now.

I might have said I believe in the Solar Co.s if they were not so expensive. Met a guy about ten yrs ago that was trying to sell his Solar system. He wanted $28,000.00 for it. He bragged about how it handled his 3 bedroom home, w/pool, his horse barn, and his ranch. I asked him, if it is so great, WHY are you selling it? He turned around and walked away from me. THAT is why I don't trust them!!!
My Brother got Solar energy installed on his home, about 25 yrs ago. But he still has to pay the electric Co. And He has a fireplace, that he uses every yr to heat the house to save electricity!

Solar is still has quite a way to go before it's an economically viable source of electricity, it will be interesting to see if this plant can operate long enough to reach that point. Personally I have my doubts.

There are quite a few new solar technologies that'll be unleashed within the next few years based around new materials and substances that should see the efficiency of solar panels rise and the cost of them fall significantly.

Even then, they won't be a solution to our energy woes, but it'll be a help.

How nice of GE to invest some of the money that they should be paying in taxes. Maybe they could bring some of the light bulb factories they have in China back to Colorado as well. If Jeffrey Immelt is involved, I'm suspicious and not quite ready to start handing out accolades

It does no good to invest in production of solar panels if the chinese are making them cheaper. Perhaps we should be investing in solar farms instead.

Solar power? Good luck with that... Does not work at night, cannot provide the amount of power to replace conventional sources. It is IMPOSSIBLE to run a modern society relying on solar or wind power while abandoning coal, oil, gas and nuclear generated power. Unless you want to go back 200 years.

It's not how much but when, if we don't start taxing big polluters and the science is to believed (which I do believe) that we are polluting our planet, the cost of fixing the problem is only going to rise and most likely exponentially.

Here in Australia we have introduced a tax on carbon emissions at around $23 a tonne and will increase by 2.5% each year for the next three years.

All businesses will need to think seriously about waste management and energy efficiency, this price will provide a real incentive to polluting businesses to work out, "How can I cut my carbon pollution, how can I change the way my business works so I can pay a lower carbon cost".

Did you know that global investment in generating renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, overtook investment in generating energy from fossil fuels? it's a market that is gathering pace globally with the greatest acceleration imaginable.
But here in Australia we have only just started to scratch the surface.

Having a price on carbon will help drive us to take advantage of these opportunities and over the next 20 years, it will create tens of billions in investment in renewable energy and tens of thousands of green jobs.
