The time is almost upon us, when the Democrats and Republicans will get together for their respective conventions. Each candidate will get a post-convention polling bounce that will fade a week later. It happens every year. It is a ritual that sometimes seems irrelevant -- and other times seems important? Do political conventions still matter?

CNN.COM reports:
The conventions are completely scripted yet they still play a valuable role, says Julian Zelizer, professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University.

Not really. Seems like a waste of funds that could go to other things. Beside we already know who's running for which side. Modern media makes it a little obsolete. Maybe they could donate the funds from these parties to the underprivileged and do some real good with it. I'm sure they spend enough to feed a village for at least a year.

The conventions do not matter like they used to. When we had every station carrying the conventions and it was your first chance to hear the candidate. When it was a squeaker as to who was going to win. Now with so many primary elections and it being a done deal the excitement has gone.

You know, there is a particular radio talk show host who has this theory that most politicians are seeking celebrity but are not attractive or talented enough to make it in the entertainment business so they run for office.

I think the conventions support that theory.

On another note, if Obama and democrats really are for the poor why not take the millions his campaign has raised and the cost of the convention and give it all to the poor. Wouldn't that seal his reelection?

But no, this shows what the liberals are really about, helping people with other people's money, not their own.

At the very heart of it, it's a giant party celebrating being a Democrat or Republican, giving a mic to people with profound convictions and beliefs for the direction of this country and give us an opportunity to meet up and comers.

It matters if they are fully televised and unbiased by the news media. This is the way the public gets to know the canidates and also get turned on for the next election.

I say "Yes" simply because of all the TV air time it takes up on the major news networks, even though you could watch Nick or Disney, ESPN or MTV if you don't like political conventions. If you desire, political conventions also give you a chance to hear the platforms of each party, without you having to leave your home.

Generally the delegates are like the electoral college and neither is willing to represent the will of the people. Conventions are a waste of time and money as are the delegates and the electoral college. Poll the citizens of each state for the candidates; Oh, gee, we do this already during the primaries, so tell me again why we need a convention. Oh yes, it gives my 95 New York delegates a chance to party for four days at the taxpayers expense. I had rather the money normally used at the convention be spent to elect the parties choice, fund debates etc.

No never mattered to me since i am non affiliated with any party, but what is the real point of the party conventions? not like all of the world doesn't already know who's names will be on the ballot and has six months before the elections.

The fact is these political conventions are expensive, four day long parties, and they still get tens of millions of dollars in taxpayer funding. Over $30 million in 2012. Granted that's only about a quarter of the total cost, but it's still a lot of taxpayer money to fund what has become a giant schmoozefest.

As nobody in either political party has any ideas on where to actually start from, continuing debates is a lost approach.

It's just nice to see people argue over nothing - because nobody in any level of government has the ideas that will change things until they are smacked in the back of the head and actually told to pay attention to what the real problem is. smack to the head

I suppose they ARE necessary to officially nominate the respective candidates, but they seem to be greatly overrated. A bunch of "rah-rah, vote for us" BS. But that's politics in a nutshell.

The identity of the candidates have been known for months. Now the conventions are slickly produced long-format ads aimed at the base.

...although this time, if some of Romney's skeletons come out of the closet ahead of the convention, there might be some drama and a new candidate selected.

"We the People" no longer matter. The conventions are a huge throw back to when multi-national corporations did not own public officals. By the way, the Framers of the U.S. Constitution were AGAINST the formation of political parties for the very reasons we have the partisanship, corruption and the bastardization of the principals of a collective democracy in this country today.

Just a few years ago a nobody who was destined to end up forgotten or even in jail was promoted at a DNC convention , the DNC bought and handed out 2 million dollars worth of copies of a book he wrote and gave him the Keynote speech position that both introduced him to the world (he pretty much never existed before that ) and made him seam legitimate as a millionaire even tho he never worked a day in his life (at least not under the name he uses now that is) ...with out that convention Democrats would be confused when their party tells them who has been pre- selected for them to vote for.

bitching? not a valuable answer. seems that Bush took Gore to the supreme court to get his 'win'

531 U.S. 98 (2000), is the United States Supreme Court decision that effectively resolved the dispute surrounding the 2000 presidential election

Bush is a bad bad bad person....

If I said anything more against him, he would have his CIA buddies at my door, kidnapping me, dousing me with gasoline and setting me aflame while he laughs at the Americans for all the damage he caused them.

So all I will say is that Bush 1 & 2 were bad...on so many levels.

If you all seem to think that Obama caused damage to America - he is just the result of the forgoing damage that the George Bush family has done for the citizens and people of America and the rest of the World.

I will be wait for you to finally realize that in 2000 the election was not even close and stop living in a strange bitter little delusion where someone stole the election from your dumb ass donkeys !
While you are back there kid have a look at what a REAL economic disasters looks like and not a cake walk like the easy ride Obama has had !!!!!!!!! President George W Bush had it far far far worse on day one than your guy had it and he did far far better at turning it around !
