I've been thinking about opening a new new business here in the United States, but I was wondering, do I need to get permission from the government before I do?

You have to get/have a bussiness license....

Why do you think manufactureing is all but gone in the USA?

Hummm , you want to open a widget factory....

Expect to wait 3 to 5 years for permits...

Expect to pay about 40% of your initial costs on permits...

Expect to pay 20% of your costs for design work...

Expect to have the EPA all up your ass , just because...

Expect the unions to drive you nuts...

This is why most manufactureing has gone out of the country...

If you are really smart , tell me why Hersheys moved manufactureing to Mexico?

You don't technically need to, but you probably should. You have to get a business license approved, etc. M

Sadly, you do, and you'll need a permit to operate, to prove you have gov.org's ok. Especially if you plan to make any money at all doing business. (They'll have to have their piece of the pie, you know, and if they don't get it, you could end up in jail.) Welcome to Amerika.

So getting permits isn't getting permission?

Why do they call them permits then?

You get permits for building, you get a business license to open up shop.

In a sense yes you do need to get permission. You need to get a business licence to operate any business, and in some cases prove that you are qualified to open the type of business you are planning.

For example to open a Construction business, We had to get a Business license, and a clearance from the State Contracters board before we could drive our first nail. To get the Contractors licinse, we had to have met many criteria, get bonded and insured, and pay the necessary fees. Plus we got a Federal Tax ID.

So to some extent Yes is the correct answer. At least in some states, and probably most. Not necessarily get permission, but definately follow some rules.

Depending on the state you live in, and the type of business you plan to start up, you could have an hundreds of forms, permits, fees, licenses, certifications, etc. to contend with.

To start one? Not really. To run one...well you better be prepared to take in no income and get shuttered in a few years. You might want to wait until the election - if Obama stays in in...wait. If Obama leaves...cash in.

I started to open a business recently and when I read all that I would have to do before I turned the first light on I said I will wait till November. Maybe some of the hoops, hurdles and regulations will be made a bit easier. President Obama is not entirely the problem but the new business climate is really poor right now. Not even the banks are willing to take a chance on up starts.

And pay for a license, and permits, too.
You also may need to take classes before you are licensed.

For all practical purposes. Especially if you plan on opening a brick and mortar type establishment. If you are not zoned for business and do not get a waiver you can not even operate out of your home in many/most places.

Yes, the government in the state you plan to occupy - there will be a series of thing to do and permits to apply for and other regulations you must comply with.

No you get the paper work and zoning approval and put the paper work through. That is
not asking permission. That is telling them that a business exists. I have 3 different construction business and a Marketing corporation and I never asked anyone for permission. I got the right paper work to open these businesses. Which wasn't asking them for anything just telling them that they eXist .

I know what you are saying. its kind of like the difference between a Tax and a Fee. Both cost you money.

So getting permits etc. (That Could be refused) is another term for permission.

Interesting how the government just changes the wording, to hid their intent.

sure they did.In NJ you can't have a Construction business unless your licensed. When you get a permit it cost you and a license cost you!

Actually you cannot get away with opening a business anywhere, without going through the hoops.

If you do, you can be shut down. Especially running a business from your home without the proper permits etc. I ran a computer support and web design business out of our basement for about 10 years. We had clients coming and going, and one day the State Labor inspector just happened to drop by and check our paperwork. If we did not have it, we could have been shut down on the spot, and our home padlocked by the Marshals.

Given the fact that they Are illegal it stands to reason the government doesn't have much concern with them breaking the laws, rules and regulations.

Not only that, you have to pay them for the privilege. We just have to do what they tell us or they lock us up and take our stuff.
