First of all Obama is not a progressive socialist. If he was we would have single payer universal health care instead of a Nixon type health plan. Second of all Kennedy was a moderate not a liberal. He wasn't much different from Nixon, the originator of Obama care.

America was still under Jim Crow laws, which relegated African-Americans (and other non-whites) to second-class status during the JFK administration. Gender discrimination was rampant. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was still a figment of the imagination.

It depends what freedom means for you.
I think freedom includes a social net. People should be secured against life risks like
Health issues, free education, unemployment, freedom of speech, bankruptcy, crime, fire and poverty and the right to work.
Only when this basic issues are secured, you may be free.

If you understand freedom as living without laws or the laws of nature thenn you will find out that earlier or later you will find the same argument.

I have never lost my freedom. Christ provides me freedom thereby I am free indeed. Whatever Christ provides it is good. Without Christ, people are bounded in sin. With Christ, people are free from sin.
