Do 4th of July Festivities Turn Children Into Republicans?

According to a new study, published by Harvard University, July 4th-themed celebrations, such as fireworks, parades, political speeches, and barbecues, "energize Republicans, turn children into Republicans and increse GOP voter turnout."

Simply put: "Fourth of July celebrations in the United States shape the nation's political landscape by forming beliefs and increasing participation, primarily in favor of the Republican Party," says the report.

Republicans, the authors say, consider themselves more patriotic than Democrats and have been more successful in "appropriating" the symbols of American patriotism during the 20th century.

The authors also argue that Independence Day celebrations have the greatest impact on children.

"Fourth of July celebrations in Republican dominated counties may thus be more politically biased events that socialize children into Republicans," say Yanagizawa-Drott and Madestam.

"We were surprised to find that childhood experiences of Fourth July celebrations could have such persistent effects."

These researchers may work at Harvard, but do you think they are correct?

Does celebrating the 4th of July really turn children into Republicans?

Been celebrating the 4th with family since I can remember. I'm far from being a Republican. I don't see why it has to be politicized.

Thanks for making me laugh. Everyone I have talked to that has lost a job did so because of an economy that downturned. And that happened because Obama's attempts to bailout his supporters at the expense of taxpayers have failed at every turn. Cash for Clunkers? Fail. GM bailout? Fail. And by the way, when you look at the Recovery.org website, be sure to see where all that stim money is going. In my area it bought opthalmic equipment and tons of peanut butter that is all sitting in a warehouse and created NO JOBS. You want a job? Then stop supporting the Democrats who want to tax us into Third World status.

I have two jobs. one full time one part time. The loan GM got is working. They are paying the loan back with interest. Chrysler paid off their loan early with interest. And thousands of jobs were saved. Cash for clunkers sold a lot of cars and it put cleaner and safer cars on the road. I am well aware that there have been some bumps in the road but we are makng progress. I will tell you what I am for. What are you for? Progress or more of the same tired failed tatics?

If GM had gone through conventional bankruptcy, they would have had the true debt relief of being able to renegotiate UAW contracts. As it is, they are selling cars for barely more than it costs to make them, largely due to labor costs. The unions have already been categorized as being willing to accept less workers rather than lower wages. At some point that is going to hit even UAW workers hard. As it is, down the road a few years, GM will again be faced with the burdensome labor contracts and this time there will be no bailout. Cash for Clunker ran out of funds far earlier than anticipated and rather than making new cars available to working families, it got them deeper in debt while simultaneously driving up the cost of late model used cars which were destroyed for no reason whatsoever. Like it or not, the cost of new cars is prohibitive for most middle income families and the government in its misguided action made the cost of cars to those who can least afford it, go up. As for bumps in the road, it's strange you use that phrase paraphrase The One himself. I don't know that the nine point one percent unemployment and the eighteen plus percent underemployed appreciate being referred to as mere bumps. As for being for failed tactics, this entire administration, with its conventional Great Society ideals of spending their way into prosperity is the function of geriatric liberals who still live in the Sixties. The failed policies are Obama's.

What is their "fair share" Dugger? Government doesn't have money. They take it from someone to give to someone else. So what is the tax payers fair share? And are YOU the elitist who will tell us what we "are entitled to"? And if someone else is entitled to their money, if they are obligated to be responsible for the recipient, then what is the RECIPIENT's responsibility? And how am I responsible to the school teacher if he or she isn't responsible to me and my children? We don't want to fire teachers. We just don't want them holding a gun to our head. And we would like them to be educationally responsible. John Dewey was a hard-core Socialist, so you have his educational programs in place. The NEA's only recommended reading list for 2.5 years were two books by Saul Alinsky; "Revile for Radicals", and "Rules for Radicals". So they get what they want without our say, and then their union leadership turns our kids into Communists without a whimper from us?

It was a pretty harsh judgement to say that people who voted different than you made you question your faith in humanity. Is it really so wrong in your eyes that the patriotic celebrations of the Fourth would inspire children to someday vote Republican?

I celebrated the 4th of July every summer as a kid, not just setting off a few fireworks, but getting together with family and making a big deal out of it. I grew up to be a Democrat.

That's just silly. My parents are raging Republicans, my sister and I are pretty liberal. We celebrated 4th of July with military families so there was never a real politicization of the events, just good old fashioned patriotism.

It's a celebration of the independence of the US is it not?

It seems everything in the US has to be directly tied to politics, which is untrue.
