Do 4th of July Festivities Turn Children Into Republicans?

According to a new study, published by Harvard University, July 4th-themed celebrations, such as fireworks, parades, political speeches, and barbecues, "energize Republicans, turn children into Republicans and increse GOP voter turnout."

Simply put: "Fourth of July celebrations in the United States shape the nation's political landscape by forming beliefs and increasing participation, primarily in favor of the Republican Party," says the report.

Republicans, the authors say, consider themselves more patriotic than Democrats and have been more successful in "appropriating" the symbols of American patriotism during the 20th century.

The authors also argue that Independence Day celebrations have the greatest impact on children.

"Fourth of July celebrations in Republican dominated counties may thus be more politically biased events that socialize children into Republicans," say Yanagizawa-Drott and Madestam.

"We were surprised to find that childhood experiences of Fourth July celebrations could have such persistent effects."

These researchers may work at Harvard, but do you think they are correct?

Does celebrating the 4th of July really turn children into Republicans?

Been celebrating the 4th with family since I can remember. I'm far from being a Republican. I don't see why it has to be politicized.

I have no idea. But does that mean that celebrating independence day makes kids more patriotic and thereby Republican? I mean, what kind of stupid argument or waste of time is this? How about this question: does attending Harvard make children or young adults less patriotic and turn them into socialists or democrats? I'd think that is more of a relevant study to spend time on.

Harvard ladies and gentlemen. The epitome of stupidity. This is where our great leaders come from.

It makes them a part of our celebration of our Independence, our Freedoms, Nothing more, nothing less. How many of us celebrated 4th of July festivities as children? How many of us are Republicans? I know I'm not! Who comes UP with this stuff!

Pyromanics maybe ... Harvard screwed the pooch on this one. Where I live it's all about barbques, a lot of alchol ( I don't drink) and fireworks. I can't recall the last time someone had a political rally during the fourth anywhere I have lived. If the children are more patriotic it's due to someone either in the family or known to the family that has served in the military and has told them what they did when they was in the service.

No, but I am sure the ACLU vampires are "ploting" the banning of patriotic symbols and celebrations in public places, because they "offend" others, just like they did with Christmas.

WTF ?????? What it does do is makes them PROUD to be Americans . What's wrong with that ? Maybe if you are a Socialist/Progressive who hates the country and its history ( which you want erased ) then I see your point . We just can't have little kids being proud of America , can we ?

thats freaken stupid, it turns them into patriotic Americans. No political party has more patriots than the other. The difference between the parties is that our liberal friends know so much that just isnt so.

You Are Correct ! Kids DON'T care , they just want fireworks & food .
BTW , America is not a democracy ( I thought that too at one time ) . America is a " Constitutional Republic ". Hope you had a great 4th.

Not only do I hope so I pray so! The children are the future and if they continue to get the wrong message and ideals from the sick and perverse Democrartic leaders, the country and world is doomed. Two men nor two women can be married no matter what any pin headed lawyer, judge, gay activists group says.....it is what I teach my daughter even though at ten she has enough common sense to know this already. I pity any child under the supervision of Adam and Steve!

Being educated and being able to make your own decisions. That makes you a Republican. If people listen to this Harvard study, you would come to the conclusion that liberals and Democrats do not respect America and do not celebrate our independence from Britain. OK.. that part is right. But celebrating the 4th does not make you a Republican.

No. That is silly. I've seen more children born of Democrats that LOVE the American flag more than anything. In fact, they love to collect flags. I wear a flag t-shirt, even if not the 4th...and I'm not a Republican either.

It is about loving America not about politics. Up bringing has nothing to do with it. My father was a democrat. I have voted for both party at one time or another. I have not voted democrat since Clinton.

No the 4th of july does not make children Republicans. It makes them understand being an American. Education, logic, reason, thrift, compassion, morals, ethics make a child Republican. Harvard used to be a great school of learning , It appears that it has now gone the way of every other secular school . Down the toilet

I think it could be that Republican parents are more likely to take their kids to 4th of July festivities and make a bigger deal out of it. I believe parents and family are the biggest influence on a child's political views later in life.
