Disney World Raises Prices, $100 Admissions Not Far Off: Outrageous or Understandable?

On Friday, Disney World raised its single-day ticket prices from $85 to $89. And if this trend keeps up, the $100 ticket will arrive in about two to three years! We love Disneyland as much as the next person. But laying down a Benjamin for a single day in a theme park! That seems outrageous to us.

Unfortunately, just a quick look at the numbers makes it clear that that’s where we’re heading. According to Beth Kassab of the Orlando Sentinel, over the past decade Disney has raised prices by an average of 6%, or about $3.90, each year. At that rate, we’ll reach the $100 ticket in 2014 or 2015.

Even if moving to three digit admissions prices makes financial sense, there’s no denying that the $100 ticket (like $4-per-gallon gas) requires crossing a big psychological milestone.

"The moment you get to three digits, it has an emotional impact," says Eli Portnoy, CEO of CultureRanch. "It's a barrier no one wants to cross, and Disney is going to have to be careful about crossing it."

Disney does have to be careful. But the fact that theme park attendance continues to rise even during tough economic times (3% last year according to the LA Times) means that further prices hikes are inevitable.

So SodaHeads, what do you think about Disney admissions prices approaching $100? Outrageous or understandable?

When you consider the size of the park, the cleanliness, the attitude of the employees, the standards, and the sheer number of rides/attractions/characters/... and then consider they literally have something for every age that walks through the gate, it all boils down to getting what you pay for.

If you don't want to pay the admission, don't go. It's that simple.

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THE EVIL EMPIRE....

The last time we were in Disneyland we were treated like pieces of chit. When I complained nothing was done...in fact they stood with the bastard that called my wife a bitch......

To be honest with you If Walt Disney knew what was going on with his dream he would turn over in his grave ....... not that he hasn't done it already

Not to mention the fact that his employees get lousy pay for the crap they have to do....which might be the reason for that one pricks attitude.

Hey....I was a performer for Disney....i didn't paid crap..I performed in the Beauty and the Beast show....I was a Union worker with AEA...and helped me get a audition for the National Tour of Les Mis.....so Disney doesnt' pay bad...if you are a character or performer you are automatically assinged ot the union of Actors Equity Association...and that's a dream when your a performer looking to get a start....Honestly the ones that handle the rides....I don't know what they get paid.....but Disney pays it's performers well....

but it still does not excuse the employee from calling my wife a bitch...he should be happy I had my kids there otherwise I'd still be in jail from beating the crap out of him.
and based on the information that I had been given me about the pay I am only at the mercy of those that give acurate information.
I guess that is one of the many reasons I have not wanted to return to Disneyland Orlando.

It's funny because its geared towards families; however I feel like they're setting themselves for failure. It will cost a family of 4 $400 to get in, and that doesn't include any of the other family vacation needs, like a place to lodge, food, etc.

Disneylsnd is great but the greedy corporate side of them sucks. I know people that have worked there and they never pay their employees very well. Everything is WAY overpriced and they are VERY cheap and treat their workers like crap.

Although I share your same results...it's outrageous....I have to disagree with you on certain employees....I worked as a performer and got doors open for me that I couldn't have gotten opened if I had just auditioned normally in NYC....All performers and characters are members of the union AEA Actors Equity Association....and they pay very well....I agree with you though....it's too expensive and corporate side is just gettin big headed more and more...

Well, I'm glad to hear you were paid well as a performer and that the Union took good care of you. Some Unions Rock! :) But there are some restaurant employees that I know from Disneyland that are treated like cattle. Not respectable. But overall, Disney does not have a great reputation for treating employees like actual people. They're known for that. I live next to Disneyland and know alot of employees and get to hear the behind the scenes, there. Also, my Grandfather was offered a job as an Disney movie animation artist in the 70's but they ONLY offered minimum wage for that position that makes them MILLIONS of $$$$$$??. WTF? Talk about cheap, unprofessional and Greedy! (THAT blew my mind!) No one with a family to support could live on minimum wage. They were Greedy and VERY cheap back then, too. Needless to say, my Grandfather had to turn down that WAY crappy deal and got a better job that paid him what his awesome talent was worth. Disney does NOT have a good reputation and are generally VERY cheap. Trust me.

No one will even want to go there anymore! Families will be the hardest to get in, and families will (or used to be) be the ones who wants in (or got In) the most. If anyone goes there anymore after that idea, it'll be only one family member while others are either stuck in a hotel room or halfway around the world!

Walt Disney is probably rolling over in his grave over this pricing. Disneyland is supposed to be a "fun" place to visit for families. In 1971, the general admission price (without rides, for kids under 18) was $7.00. In those days you could get in under general admission and see the entertainment for that price, if you wanted to buy tickets for the rides, you could do that as well. However, at the price they are charging now, only certain people can really afford to take their family to the park. It is ridiculous. Just wait until it hits Disneyland in the pocket--meaning, people are going to stop going there, and go somewhere else more affordable. Then it will hit the hotels, airlines, rental cars, restaurants, etc. in the pocketbook. Disneyland has enough commercial sponsors. They will end up "rolling back the prices" before the summer is out when they see that their price hike was a poor choice. I understand that the insurance is extremely high for commercial amusement parks.

Everything has increased in price since 1971... Average rent in 1971 was $150, do you think everyone back then could afford that? If Disney prices had increased at the rate that everything else has, we'd already be paying over $100. Maybe some people will stop going, but not enough for it to make them lower prices.
  • Deb Faith ~... 2012/06/11 19:52:49
    Deb
I just picked a year--of course everything has increased. I bet you Disneyland lowers their prices---enough pressure from "the people" that refuse to pay the price---will lower it like anything else----for example all of the fast food restaurants all have "value" items on their menus. Before they did "value items" they were losing customers because the cost of fast food was not affordable for families. It will happen to Disneyland too. They will be forced to lower their costs.
  • Faith ~... Deb 2012/06/11 20:01:59
    Faith ~American Patriot~
I highly doubt it. Fast food is something that people do on a whim, Disney really isn't. Non-residents plan trips to Disney and choose that destination on purpose, and they will continue to do so. They haven't been forced to lower their costs yet, and it's doubtful that they will ever have to. We went twice this last year in Cali and plan on going at least once to Cali and once to FL in the next year.
  • Deb Faith ~... 2012/06/13 03:20:15
    Deb
Well good for you. But how many families can actually afford a Disney vacation anymore? People have lost their jobs, are struggling to make ends meet. It should be affordable for all families despite people's incomes.
  • Faith ~... Deb 2012/06/14 14:39:21 (edited)
    Faith ~American Patriot~
Why should it be affordable for all families despite their income? What vacation in the WORLD is affordable for all families? Disney is not a charity project, it is a business and it's purpose, as is true of ALL businesses, is to turn a profit. Disney is a privilege, and a luxury; no one is owed or entitled to a visit. On an average day in Cali, about 40,000 people can afford it.

Yep, I work for a living, and I think the admission price is ridiculous!
  • Faith ~... Deb 2012/07/01 16:16:36
    Faith ~American Patriot~
You can think the price is ridiculous, don't go there, but they are allowed to want to make a profit. I'm sure you don't go to work every day hoping to break even, and I'm sure you don't work year after year never wanting a raise.
  • Deb Faith ~... 2012/07/03 02:25:46
    Deb
I have friends that work in Management positions there. I know they have a right to make a profit. But when the profit is all about greed, and not higher benefits and hourly wages for employees, then there is a problem, Houston! This price increase has nothing to do with raises. It is called GREED. Do get a reality check you need one.
  • Faith ~... Deb 2012/07/03 14:17:33
    Faith ~American Patriot~
It seems the one that needs a reality check is you. Every single company in the world increases prices to increase profit from mom and pop shops, to fortune 500 companies. Besides, how do you know what they plan to do with the money? You don't.

I'm not jealous of anyone. I just think that amusement parks should be affordable to all families. Apparently you do not, and apparently only give a rat's ass about yourself.
  • Faith ~... Deb 2012/07/19 08:41:19
    Faith ~American Patriot~
WHY should they be affordable for all? Is Disney some sort of 'right'? No, it's not. All families? So for those who sit on their rears all day and have no money to get in what should the price be? Free?? Maybe they should all work for smiles, that way EVERYONE can go, lmao. You're right, because I think Disney is a luxury I must not care about anyone else, what a joke. Please show me ANY business that is not working to make a profit. Unless you can do so, stop wasting my time.

LMAO all over yourself. I don't have to answer any of your questions. But plenty of friends that work for Disney, think that the admission price is outrageous in a down economy especially in California. And they believe that all children should be able to experience Disneyland. As one of them said, "you don't throw the eye candy on television," and market the hell out of a place that not everyone can get the opportunity to visit." Let me guess, you are voting for Obama!
