Disney World Raises Prices, $100 Admissions Not Far Off: Outrageous or Understandable?

On Friday, Disney World raised its single-day ticket prices from $85 to $89. And if this trend keeps up, the $100 ticket will arrive in about two to three years! We love Disneyland as much as the next person. But laying down a Benjamin for a single day in a theme park! That seems outrageous to us.

Unfortunately, just a quick look at the numbers makes it clear that that’s where we’re heading. According to Beth Kassab of the Orlando Sentinel, over the past decade Disney has raised prices by an average of 6%, or about $3.90, each year. At that rate, we’ll reach the $100 ticket in 2014 or 2015.

Even if moving to three digit admissions prices makes financial sense, there’s no denying that the $100 ticket (like $4-per-gallon gas) requires crossing a big psychological milestone.

"The moment you get to three digits, it has an emotional impact," says Eli Portnoy, CEO of CultureRanch. "It's a barrier no one wants to cross, and Disney is going to have to be careful about crossing it."

Disney does have to be careful. But the fact that theme park attendance continues to rise even during tough economic times (3% last year according to the LA Times) means that further prices hikes are inevitable.

So SodaHeads, what do you think about Disney admissions prices approaching $100? Outrageous or understandable?

When you consider the size of the park, the cleanliness, the attitude of the employees, the standards, and the sheer number of rides/attractions/characters/... and then consider they literally have something for every age that walks through the gate, it all boils down to getting what you pay for.

If you don't want to pay the admission, don't go. It's that simple.

Like I said, it's either worth it to you, or it's not. People need to remember, as with most things these days, Disney is a privilege, not a right. There are many things in this world that are wonderful and special experiences that most will not ever get to have. It takes a lot to keep Disney going, and no one works to break even.

oh for The Love Of God, do you get to travel outside your state much?. Disney is not a priviledge. It's a business. Members of my family are employed by Disney Aulani Resort. We know more about Disney than you could ever hope to. My husband and I have been to DisneyWorld twice, for business conventions, we have taken our children to DisneyLand three times, and are planning a fourth trip. You response is arrogant and small-townish at the same time. Sad. Disney is in business to make money which they do by attracting visitors world-wide. This is accomplished by competitive pricing and hotel-Air-car-meals-park admission packages. Your trip was special to you and your family, but in the scheme of things it is no more special than anyone else's trip. Considering the current price of airline travel due to oil prices, it is risky for Disney to raise their admission prices too greatly. I am sure as anything that Disney management is well aware of the risk they are taking, but are willing to give it a go anyway.

Do I get to travel outside of my state much? Yes. Last June we were in Myrtle Beach for two weeks, August we went to Cali for Disneyland and Sea World for a week, September we were in Arizona for a week, November we went to Baltimore and DC for a week, February we were back in Cali for a week, March we were in Mexico for 3 weeks, May we were in San Antonio for a week and also went to Arizona for a week, on Monday we're headed back to Myrtle Beach for a couple of weeks, in August we're going to France for a couple of weeks, and September into October we're headed to Africa.
I never said Disney wasn't a business, I said it is something that not everyone should just expect to do.
You have no CLUE what I know about Disney, but way to make asinine assumptions. As the parent of a 5-year-old, we have been to Disney twice in the last year, and growing up we went at least every other year, if not every year.
Small-townish, lmao. My "town" falls 400,000 people short of beating your entire state in population.
They know it's not a risk, because they know people will pay it, and they're right.

Your trips are important to you. Your daughter will be missing a lot of school. Travel is nice, you surely do a lot of it.

We do find it important that our daughter experience as much as possible, and thankfully we are in the position to do that for her. She will miss some school, but most of our travels are during break times.

...that's a lot of breaks. Travel is a great way for kids to learn geography...and sometimes, how nice one's own bed can be. You must be worried about your home while you are away so much--sounds like 1-2 weeks almost every month.

Walt Disney must be turning over in his grave! He never would have allowed the ticket prices to go so beyond reasonable! He wanted to create a place where families could be together enjoying each others' company. We haven't gone to Disneyland as a family for several years. I doubt if we'll go there too soon at this rate.

Disney will continue to raise prices until they break the desire of people to come to their parks. Then they will lower ticket prices and not until then. As long as they can fill their parks with people they will charge what the market will bare. We decided it was to expensive at $82.

I actually just got back from Disneyworld. We went with a family friend who's brother lives in Florida and works as an imagineer. (Free entry xD) While it was "fun" the main problem there was we spent ALL DAY only got on 5 rides. The lines are 1-3 hour waits with fast passes, and as most mentioned their prices (for gimmicky family food) and concessions is excruciatingly high. I did enjoy the atmosphere the whole time, but to really experience the park it seems like you would need a week. Was it worth $100 admission a day though? For me....mmmm no, not really.

  • Faith ~... nofrills 2012/06/12 22:36:06 (edited)

Why is it overcharging? Because you say it is? If a parent has to take from their child's college fund to cover Disneyland/World, they probably shouldn't be going. Besides, in that case it would be the parent stealing from the kid, not Disney, no one is forcing them to go.

i think disney is overrated. also the waits on rides depends onwhat day you go. saturdays are usually the worse days to go. that being said i will take cedar point over disney any day!!!! even on saturday the waits are not that long disney should take lessons from cedar point about wait times.

The Sauds own the majority of Disney. ( ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS follow the money and the power NO MATTER WHO , eh? )

Why support owners of slaves who want us all to pay ten dollars per gallon of gas as well so they can have their solid gold weaponry ... platinum plated vehicles .. Palm tree shaped islands made by their ... "employees" etc etc ???

Am I the only one who looks any of this up? They are all over California etc etc ...

I don't think I'd go that far..... It is ALWAYS our choice as to whether or not we open our pocketbooks to Disney. I personally, haven't been to Disneyland in about 6 years. And while, we were talking about making another visit this year, I don't plan on making another visit after that for quite some time. My kids are getting older & they tend to prefer the parks with bigger rides now.
