Disney World Bans 'Tinker Bell' Costume: Fair?

Disney World doesn't want to confuse its patrons and has a strict policy to keep it the Happiest place on Earth." Walt Disney World's dress code for visitors, which is published on the resort's website, states "adult costumes or clothing that can be viewed as representative of an actual Disney character" is inappropriate theme park attire that "may result in refusal of admittance."

April Spielman wanted her boyfriend's first trip to Walt Disney World to be memorable, so she planned to do something special -- dress up like Tinker Bell.

April looks great in her costume -- and kudos to her for making it so realistic. But she should have understood the policy and accepted the free clothing offered to her by park officials (instead of crying on camera).

I said it before and I'll say it again. Disney is a company and they have a policy. If a person doesn't like a company's policy, they shouldn't make use of the company. If you go to McDonald's at noon, let's say, and order a McMuffin, Mr. or Ms Want-Fries-With-That behind the counter is going to tell you it's too late, it's time for lunch, and they're serving hamburgers. You can eat a hamburger or you can go somewhere else, but you can't throw a tantrum, because infants do that and you're not an infant. Same thing with this young lady and Disney. She should have either worn real clothes (offered to her gratis with a FastPass) or just forgotten the whole thing, but not thrown a tantrum.

I wonder how many tourists wanted to take her picture because they thought she worked there?? Just think of the scenario of a stalker who wanted to follow someone, they thinking the person worked there, and followed them to a off limits area to be attacked or killed or robbed??? Think of a child abduction at the park by a "supposed" employee?? Think of copyright enfringement??

It's a safety issue. I work there, I know the policy well. If we let one person in on a normal day with a costume, then we risk letting a pedophile or some other undesirable person in with an excuse to go after children.

However, Disney seems to have inconsistent security. She got into one park, but not the other. The policy should be the same throughout all the parks.

"Spielman said she and her boyfriend, who was dressed as Peter Pan, had no problem getting into Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park on Sunday. But when they tried to visit Disney's Animal Kingdom later, Spielman said security officers stopped them at the front gate."

Weekends are Star Wars days at Hollywood Studios. It was a special event where they let people in costumes into the parks. It's one of the only times that they allow it.

I'm sorry, I don't agree with that decision. It states that they "may" refuse entrance. She was only 15....they should have had an exception.

Fifteen is past the age group where costumes can be worn at the company's establishments. Nine is the cut-off

I can understand the need for a policy but this is something most people don't do alot of by wearing costumes into Disney themeparks. April looked adorable in her Tinker Bell costume and should have been left alone. Disney was more concerned with her crying on camera dressed as Tinker Bell than their actual concern for her well being.

I see this but obviously this is a young girl still folks not a woman....she wanted to be tinker bell and it made her sad...as far as showing anything that's just the Tinker Bell style. In any case this could have been handled better I would imagine by the folks at Disney when they found out her age and such, and quite honestly you could tell the difference but whatever (of course I am assuming little girls are not running around without an adult--who should have also been able to tell the difference)

It sounds like Disney did everything humanly possible to allow her in to the park and she refused it ! Sounds like somebody is getting ready to sue Disney for "mental anguish". I hope they counter sue for defamation.

"Disney park officials gave Spielman a free shirt and other clothing to wear instead of her costume. The company also provided her family with numerous FastPass tickets, which enabled them to skip the lines on rides they missed while the teenager was changing clothes."

No mention in the article about refusing an offer. They even provided alternative clothing.

I'm sorry, but Disney tickets are EXPENSIVE. So expensive that save a few things, people should be allowed to dress as they please...Instead, I feel scared to dress as I choose, and that's just plain wrong. If a little girl can run around in a sub-par Disney costume, than I , or anybody else should be allowed to as well.

For the record this is how I dress normally: Mess

And I was told by others that I wouldn't be allowed to even dress like that. D: But nah, it was okay, this was actually taken at the Hollywood Studios portion of Disney World.

Also,I didn't see any "costumed characters" running around when I went too. I felt gyped!

Which is stupid. Of course it's going to look like a costume. People are boring and have no sense of style. The moment someone has a whimsical sense of fashion, they ask them if what they're wearing is a costume.

I don't think that should be a rule. If someone is wearing something that is delibarately a character, then, yes, I do see the issue. But there are NO Lolita characters in ANY Disney films, so no, it shouldn't be an issue.

Hun,I went to both Disney World AND Universal in what could be considered Lolita garb-No issue. It's not listed ANYWHERE as being an issue.

And Lolita isn't a costume. The problem is when adults dress like characters from Disney movies. If we let one adult dress up then there is no way of preventing someone who means to harm a child from dressing up and using the costume as leverage to get close to children. And the girl WAS dressed up like Tinker Bell, on purpose.

People consider Lolita, gothwear, or anything that's subculture a costume. There's a big problem with that. They should ban children from wearing costumes too.Sorry. Oh yes, she was ,but she was still just a teenager-screaming brats are allowed to dress in costume, but not her? Not fair, sorry.

My daughter wore her Minnie Mouse costume into Disneyland. Of course, she was 3 years old. She had her pic taken with Minnie, too. However, Tinkerbell is showing quite a bit more cleavage than a 3 year old Minnie Mouse. From their policy, it's clear that it's adults who may be the problem. I can also see their point. They have costumed characters (adult sized) running around for everyone to have a photo op with. If they have unofficial adults in costume, they could be scamming the tourists or being deliberately rude or provocative or all sorts of PR nightmarish things.

Tinkerbell, here, should quit whining and complaining. She was offered free clothes to wear instead. Maybe, her boyfriend will realize what a crybaby she is and give her something to cry about (like a breakup!).

This has always been the rule at Disney parks. Children are permitted to wear costumes but adults are not so as not to be confused with employees.

If they let her do it then maybe the next person coming in could be a child molester dressed up as Captain Hook. Imagine the lawsuit.
Sorry their brand, their theme park, their rules. If you don't like it go somewhere else.
