I had never heard of this until a couple of years back when a girlfriend of mine told me it's an Albanian tradition. Her father and uncles do this here which I think is a bit nuts and dangerous.

I used to shoot my black powder guns in the air New Year's Eve, with powder and wadding, no bullet. Wife stopped that, however; scares our dogs, and annoyed the neighbors... FYI, even the wadding can be lethal within 10 feet...

Firecrackers with cigarette fuses do work where they present no danger. All the neighborheed lights go on ... as if Holder and Napalitano come storming over the border, armed to their crotches, blazing away like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, keeping the spirit of "Fast and Furious" alive for their memoirs.

I feel sorry for you, that you think shooting live bullets in the air constitutes a good time or that the cops are somehow being jerks for making such an ignorant event stop for the safety of others around you. Shoot blanks, at least no one would be killed.

Use brains. The bullet falls down like a pebble. Its not shooting sideways. Or if its a big chunk of lead shoot in the dirt. I am perfectly aware of the right ways to shoot guns. I have shot many rounds.

These days common sense isn't very common! I've been shooting since I was young too. so gun safety has always been a part of my life. If people want to shoot their guns in the air, all they have to do is get some blanks & shoot the moon all they want.
