(CBS News) George Zimmerman told Fox News' Sean Hannity on Wednesday that the Trayvon Martin shooting was "a tragic situation."

"I hope it's the most difficult thing I'll ever go through in my life," said Zimmerman, who is charged with second-degree murder in the 17-year-old's death.

Zimmerman told Hannity that he had not been home since Feb. 26, the night he shot Martin.

"I wanted to go to Target and I headed out and that's the last time I've been home," he said.

Hannity, who had been in contact with Zimmerman before he was arrested in April, taped the interview Wednesday in Seminole County, Fla.

The Fox News host began the interview by asking Zimmerman why he became a community watchman. Zimmerman recalled an August 2011 neighborhood burglary that scared his wife.

"I promised her I would do what I could to keep her safe," he said.

Zimmerman told Hannity that he carried his gun - for which he had a permit - everywhere he went, except work, but that prior to the night he shot Martin he'd never heard of Florida's "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law. He also said he felt that his life was in danger and that the media attention to his case felt "surreal."

Hannity spent the first segment of the interview focused on the night of the shooting. He asked if when Zimmerman saw Martin reach toward his waistband, "Did you think that was a gun?"

"I thought he was just trying to intimidate me," said Zimmerman

"To make you think there's a gun..." offered Hannity.

"A weapon."

"Of some kind," said Hannity.

"Possibly," said Zimmerman.

Zimmerman, describing seeing Martin coming toward him, said: "His demeanor, his body language was confrontational."

Hannity asked why Zimmerman said "yes" when the dispatch operator asked him if he was following Martin.

"I mean that I was going in the same direction as him to keep an eye on him so I could tell the police where he was going. I didn't mean that I was actually pursuing him," Zimmerman explained.

When asked about the confrontation that led to the shooting, Zimmerman said that Martin "asked me what my problem was."

He said he was wearing a rain jacket that night and that he'd put his cell phone in that instead of his jeans, where he normally kept it.

"I immediately went to grab my phone to call 911 instead of the non-emergency and when I reached into my pants pocket it wasn't there and I was shocked," Zimmerman said. "I looked up and he punched me and broke my nose."

Zimmerman said he ended up on the ground and that Martin punched him more than a dozen times.

Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, sat next to him throughout the interview but only spoke briefly. O'Mara has recently filed a motion asking for the judge in the case, Judge Kenneth Lester, to step down. Zimmerman told Hannity that he is "confident in the system" that will determine whether he goes to prison or not for Martin's death.

"I'm not a racist and I'm not a murderer," he said.

Zimmerman said he prayed daily for the Martin family and was sorry for the death of their son. When first asked, he said he didn't regret either carrying a gun that night or getting out of the car, which the 911 dispatcher advised him not to do. He said that looking back, he wouldn't have done anything differently.

"It was all God's plan," Zimmerman said.

But at the end of the interview, he readdressed the issue, saying he hadn't clearly understood the question.

"I do wish that there was something, anything that I could have done that wouldn't have put me in the position where I had to take his life," Zimmerman said.

In response to Zimmerman's comments on Fox News that the incident was "God's plan," Tracy Martin, Trayvon's father, told CBS News: "We must worship a different God because there is no way that my God would have wanted George Zimmerman to kill my teenage son."

If Trayvon attention was to attack you then why He still had his cell phone with his girlfriend on it. Most people if you got on your mind to attack someone youre going to but your cell phone up so it wont get damage in the struggle. He would of never been still on the cell phone talking with his girlfriend that dont make sense when something dont make sense it dont make sense. Now if he was cought off gruard then that makes since why he still had his cell phone in his hand he was a 17 year old boy they dont take a cell phone to a fight He would hung up with his girl friend I will call you back or something put his cell in his pocket then confronted him.By him being on cell phone with his girlfriend tells me alot common sense his attention wasnt to attack Zimmerman something happen that we will never know cause Trayvon isnt here to tell his side of story.

If what he says is accurate, I really have no problem with him shooting Trayvon. It is a horrible thing to be sure and it would have been better if it never came to that end, but I do believe Zimmerman was fighting for his life.

Unfortunately no. That being said, I wonder what kind of uproar would be ensuing if the situation had been reversed. Sure as hell wouldn't have gotten the attention this is getting.

Zimmerman does not have to apologize for putting down a rabid dog.

How many parents are totally clueless on what thugs their children are until they get a call from the police?

    I watched the entire interview.

I am not sure about everything Zimmerman said, but he was very convincing. The interview was probably granted to Fox because just about all the rest of the media convicted him without any evidence... and some of the media doctored and edited his 911 call to make him seem guilty of racism. That has now been proved by the FBI to be totally false.

The facts are that Zimmerman was on the ground after having been slugged in the nose by a 6 foot 2, 170 lb teenager banging Zimmerman's head into the concrete, a teenager with a record of violence....and there is a witness, besides Zimmerman, to verify most of it except for the actual shooting.

The question for the jury is whether or not it was Zimmerman who instigated the confrontation...and the evidence is beginning to point to Martin, not Zimmerman.

If what Zimmerman has averred is true, and there is no reason at this point to to doubt it, in the same circumstances, I would have shot Martin.

I saw part of it, didn't watch it all. I think even for Hannity it was foolish. The man deserves his day in court, even if he has been overcharged for political gain. And I feel bad for the family of Martin. I think that the only place for any of this to come out is in the court room. And you know damn well, that if the case is dismissed or he is acquitted, that there is going to be a lawsuit or some sort filed. So I say sham on Hannity for doing something I would expect the Democrats to have done.

I think it was a foolish move. He gave lots of ammunition to the prosecution, from what I've read about it.

I think to many have just to judgement. The media and liberal democrats jumped on the topic once they saw the name George Zimmerman shoot Trayvon Martin. They thought they had a great story of a white man shooting a black boy. That not a racist statement, that is a fact of judgement. Then the OH SH*T factor happen, George Zimmerman looks Hispanic and in fact is half. This is not the face of a white man and after all the speeches of white on black crimes by the media and liberals democrats. They are trying to save face, they have to find someone who can point and George as a racist.

The problem is, the more they try to force feed the public about just how bad George Zimmerman was they keep getting kick in the mouth with the facts. Trayvon was not a innocent teen boy, he was a career criminal whom has a police record taller than he.

That was NOT GOD's plan! How dare he say that? God gave man free will and Zimmerman used that free will to shoot an unarmed teen.
