The State of Hate: White Supremacist Groups Growing

The number of hate groups operating in the United States continued to
rise in 2008 and has grown by 54 percent since 2000 — an increase
fueled last year by immigration fears, a failing economy, and the
successful campaign of Barack Obama, according to the Southern Poverty
Law Center (SPLC). The SPLC identified 926 hate groups active in 2008,
up more than four percent from the 888 groups in 2007 and far above the
602 groups documented in 2000.15

"Barack Obama's election has inflamed racist extremists who see
it as another sign that their country is under siege by nonwhites," said
Mark Potok, editor of the Intelligence Report, a SPLC
quarterly investigative journal that monitors the radical right. "The
idea of a black man in the White House, combined with the deepening
economic crisis and continuing high levels of Latino immigration, has
given white supremacists a real platform on which to recruit."16

The DHS assessment on right-wing extremism, which was provided to
federal, state, and local law enforcement, warned that right-wing
extremists "may be gaining new recruits by playing on their fears about
several emergent issues. The economic downturn and the election of the
first African American president present unique drivers for rightwing
radicalization and recruitment."

In the days prior to the presidential election, Daniel Cowart,
20, of Bells, Tennessee and Paul Schlesselman, 18, of West Helena,
Arkansas were arrested by federal agents for allegedly plotting to
assassinate Obama followed by a plan to engage in a multi-state "killing
spree." The men met through the Internet and planned to shoot 88
African Americans and behead another 14. Targets included a
predominantly African-American school. At the end of the alleged spree,
the men intended to try to kill Obama. "88," an important number in
skinhead numerology, means "Heil Hitler" — as "H" is the eighth letter
of the alphabet. "14" likely refers to the "14 Words," a white
supremacist slogan that originated with the late David Lane. Lane died
last year in prison while serving a sentence for his role in an
assassination plot carried out by The Order, a white supremacist
terrorist group that was destroyed in 1984. One of the suspects, Cowart,
is a known member of a new skinhead hate group, the Supreme White
Alliance (SWA), formed at the beginning of 2008, according to the
Southern Poverty Law Center. He attended a birthday party for Adolf
Hitler held last April by the group. SWA is headed by Steven Edwards,
son of Ron Edwards, who leads the Imperial Klans of America.17

After Obama's election victory in November, white supremacist
online activity spiked, with people posting hundreds of messages to
online forums. White supremacist groups and individuals claimed that the
Obama presidency, the immigration issue, and tough economic times would
serve as powerful catalysts for recruiting more people to the white
supremacist movement. Jeff Schoep, head of the National Socialist
Movement, the largest Neo-Nazi group in America, said interest in the
NSM "has really spiked up," but would not reveal by how much.18
Don Black, a 55 year-old former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard, claimed more
than 2,000 people joined his website on the day after Obama's election,
up from 80 on an ordinary day. Started in 1995, Black's website is one
of the oldest and largest hate group sites, now claiming 110,000
members. As David Duke, a former Klan leader who was once a member of
the Louisiana legislature, has said, Obama is a "visual aid" that
galvanizes the white supremacist movement.19

According to Schoep, extremists are also exploiting the economic
crisis, spreading propaganda that blames minorities and immigrants for
the subprime mortgage meltdown. "Historically, when times get tough in
our nation, that's how movements like ours gain a foothold," he said.
"When the economy suffers, people are looking for answers. … We are the
answer for white people."20 Membership in the National
Socialist Movement has grown by 40 percent in recent months, according
to Schoep, the "most dramatic growth" since the mid-1990s, mostly
because of the nation's dire economic circumstances. "You have an
American work force facing massive unemployment. And you have presidents
and politicians flinging open the borders telling them to take the few
jobs left while our men are in soup kitchens."21

In Pennsylvania, where the Hispanic population has increased 41
percent from 2000 through 2007, "Keystone United," a hate group that
recently changed its name from "Keystone State Skinheads," has used the
immigration issue to recruit new members. "A lot of these small
working-class towns are being invaded by different types of people,"
said Douglas Myers, one of Keystone United's founders. USA Today
described Keystone United as a group that "speaks out for the rights of
whites being pushed aside by newcomers." The group plans
family-friendly outings, meets in public libraries, and avoids the
violence traditionally associated with skinheads. "It's not the footage
from the ‘80s with people burning crosses. It's a very healthy
environment," said Myers.22

Ann Van Dyke of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission said of
Keystone United: "It appears they are tapping into and fanning the
flames of mainstream America's fear of immigrants. They are increasingly
using the language of Main Street, things like, ‘We want safe
communities to raise our children.'"23

"Many white supremacist groups are going more mainstream," said Jack
Levin, a Northeastern University criminologist who studies hate crime.
"They are eliminating the sheets and armbands. … The groups realize if
they want to be attractive to middle-class types, they need to look
middle-class." Levin estimated fewer than 50,000 people are members of
white supremacist groups, but he says their influence is growing with a
more sophisticated approach.24

DHS assesses that since the 2008 election, right-wing extremists
"have capitalized on related racial and political prejudices in expanded
propaganda campaigns, thereby reaching out to a wider audience of
potential sympathizers."

The Nation of Yahweh is a predominantly African-American religious group that is the most controversial offshoot of the Black Hebrew Israelites line of thought. It was founded in 1979 in Miami by Hulon Mitchell Jr., who went by the name Yahweh ben Yahweh. Its goal is to return African Americans, whom they see as the original Israelites, to Israel. The group departs from mainstream Christianity and Judaism by accepting Yahweh ben Yahweh as the Son of God. In this way, its beliefs are unique and distinct from that of other known Black Hebrew Israelite groups.[1][2] The group has engendered controversy due to legal issues of its founder and has also faced accusations of being a black supremacist cult by the Southern Poverty Law Center

Ok, what is your point. I never said there weren't racist black hate groups. I said there are not 800 or a number even close, and that gangs are different from hate groups. Not that I agree with what they do. But they are a different kind of beast to handle. But to answer your strawman argument. When black African Jews returned to Israel in 1969 under the Right of Return Act, the government ruled that they were not real Jews and therefore did not qualify for citizenship or any legal status. The black Hebrews were also denied state benefits and work permits. It wasn’t until 2003 that black Hebrews were granted permanent residency, but not the automatic citizenship granted to all other races returning on the exact same provision. Most white hate groups are started to purge, most black hate groups are started in retaliation.

That is true but my point was the difference between gangs and hate groups, and which hate groups pose more of a threat. Which I explained in my posts above. You are running in circles. My evidence to this is the last post I posted and the last post you posted. My post was informing you that you were miss informing people about the threat level of racist black hate groups compared, to white racist hate groups. Your response was they both pose "A" threat. Which is fairly obvious.

I'm not African American or am I white, so I cant be really all that bias, but if you would compare the numbers of deaths over race from both sides youd get your answer. Some hate using words and some with actions, actions is worse..

Besides the fact is both sides have haters no one said that an entire race is formed of angels, however stating that "blacks" also happen to have racists too isnt a valid justification, just because there are those who hate you from that race doesnt mean they all do, that is called a hasty generalization..

That was just another perspective to things, I mean lets sort of face it, African Americans did go through alot of discrimination more than the whites. HOWEVER I'm not even trying to suggests that thats a valid reason to hate "white" people.

Neo-Condeferates, White Nationalists, neo-Nazis, the KKK, and racist skin head groups, to name a few.

But we shouldn't forget the black separatist groups and several types of antisemitic groups as well.

Add in the many anti-gay groups, some misogynistic religious groups and it becomes clear that hatred is alive and well in the USA.

I think you miss understood what I was saying. If you read my earlier post you will see that I said, gangs are not specifically targeting people who aren't in gangs. That does not make what they do right, and some do steal. But it is different from hate groups who attack people who aren't of their race, religion or nationality. This is my point I'm not siding with gangsters im just saying they are a different kind of beast to address. Because we lock up these gangsters its just more replace them, but most of these hate groups we protect and scream freedom of speech, and when someone is hurt from following the rhetoric of said hate group. We say "oh well how do we know that billy ( just picking a name) really attack leroy. (another ramdom name) I mean billy said he doesn't even know leroy and leroy said he doesn't know billy. Maybe leroy is confused on who attack him." When all the time billy did attack leroy and he doesn't know leroy but he knows he doesn't like leroy's race, nationaltiy or religion. Then we call that a random crime, and when it comes to light that billy is racist we say well it's his right to feel and think the way he does as if that has nothing to do with his actions.

Notice you said they are locked up. That implies we did try and stop them. Jail is our harshest punishment aside from the death penalty. Again I get you want to readdress the way we handed that, but aleast we address gangster as a problem whereas we say these hate groups are just showing pride. If we locked up half the people for being in a hate group as we do people for being in a gang, much of the gang violence would die down. Most gangs are formed in the beginning trying to protect their neighborhood or family in the area. My point being most start as defense not offense.

Oh, believe me, I get all that and wasn't going for any race angle whatsoever.
I'm speaking directly to the problem with gang activity in the drug world which knows no color.
There are plenty of white idiots out there cooking up Meth and engaging youths to be their runners.
It always winds up with paranoid fools who have weapons and the results aren't pretty.
I'm just getting a bit worn out with the press over-blowing select incidents while ignoring the daily murders that don't make the news.
As tragic as 6 or 12 people being shot all at once, ..... the same number go down in the the streets of Chitcago every weekend and nobody bats an eye.
