AP2012A high-level Mexican cartel member laundered millions of dollars in drug money through the highfalutin world of horse racing, federal officials say
"This case is a prime example of the ability of Mexican drug cartels to establish footholds in legitimate U.S. industries and highlights the serious threat money laundering causes to our financial system," said Richard Weber, the chief of the IRS' criminal investigation unit.
Seven of the 14 people indicted were arrested, including Jose Trevino Morales and his wife, Zulema. Another Trevino brother was also charged.
Prosecutors asked that no bond be set for Trevino fearing he would either flee or intimidate witnesses. He declined to comment at the courthouse.
The indictment describes how the Trevino brothers and a network quietly arranged to purchase quarter horses with drug money at auction and disguise the source of the funds used to buy them so that the Zetas' involvement would be masked. They would often pay in cash, or use fake names, which helped keep the owners and the money a secret.
Have been doing it for years
With over 30,000 people killed just over our boarder in Mexico...and with the violence spilling over into our country, we would all be far better off if we spent our valuable tax bucks on drug rehab instead of drug intradiction. The "war on drugs" is not working.
Take the "war" part out and allow free market capitalism to provide quality products with gov't oversight and licensing. Make the sales subject to the same tax system that the rest of our commerce is subjected to and those that are "victims" of the drugs they buy would suddenly have the recourse of our court system available to them. Today, the "victims of drug use are criminals by virtue of having bought and consumed the drugs. By legalizing drugs, the parents of a kid that O.D.ed on crack would have recourse to the manufacturer for compensation. Our current laws prevent that recorse from happening.
