John Tolos and his brother Chris Tolos were grapplers from the days when grappling was still a local business.

John Tolos also known as the Golden Greek was the main event in Los Angeles for all of the 70s! The man was a villain and a good guy and his feuds with Earl Maynard, Rocky "Soul Man" Johnson, Victor Rivera, Ruben Juarez, Mil Mascaras are memorable!

Who can forget when he busted a guitar upside Raul Mata's head and when he threw the doctor powder in Freddie Blassie's eyes! That event let to a giant revenge match that filled the Colisieum in Los Angeles!

Anyway, the Golden Greek is gone and I didn't even find out until today! He died on May 29, 2009.

Rest in peace my man!

Awe....that's sad and you just found out after over a month? I was on a plane back to the bay area from Hawaii on my sisters birthday...May 29....

Yeah he was from the 70s, before WWE when wrestling was still local. He wrestled under the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and held the America's Champion belt of and on for about 10 years.

Hey do you see that RI. 9-51 at the top? Do you know what that is? That was the phone number to the Olympic Auditorium! That's how phone numbers were written with the first two represented by a word. The whole number was:

Richmond 9-5171 and Richmond was the first two numbers on the "dial" RI where R was 7 & I was 4 so the number was 749-5171

My phone number back then was Pleasant 4-1109 or PL4-1109 or 754-1109.

John Tolos almost owned the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles during the 1970s. He and his brother Chris were originally from Canada and started off on the East Coast but I didn't get into him until he came to LA in the 70s and he was awesome!

Actually the wrestling fans in LA during the 70s were mostly black and hispanic and some of us loved him and others hated him but we all couldn't get enough of him! (-:

Thats not my cup of tea.I'd rather listen to Elvis Presley or Greek music
than watch goofy wrestling. I like watching olympic diving and scuba diving.
I used to be a good swimmer and Id actually rather watch Phelps than that.
